You are looking to the east from the front of the Lima Cemetery, at the north half of the original burial ground.
It is 25 below zero with 6 inches of fresh power snow on the ground, luckily the wind is not blowing 25 mph.
It is a day in the winter life of the pioneers and their offspring of the Lima and Albany, Iowa area.

The south side of the Lima Cemetery overlooking the Volga River bottoms to the east toward Wadena 4 miles away.
The river bottom was deeper richer soil for the pioneer families so some of the first entered and claimed.
It is mid summer in pioneer northern Iowa with temperature at 96 degrees and the humidity about the same.
Nearly all of the early family burials in the Albany and Lima area, not buried on homesteads,
would be buried in the views of the two pictures above.

....A burial ground association was formed at Lima in 1865.  Ground was bought and laid out where some graves were already located.  The Lima Cemetery contains many markers of the pioneers of the Lima and Albany Valley and their families.  

....One of the unique memorials is a life-size figure of a farm hand, John Crawford, who died in 1906 (born 1863).  John had taken only enough money for a few simple needs during his lifetime, so the daughter of his employer put aside money he earned.  After his death she was determined to use the accumulated wages for a monument.  Libbie Harrison went to Barre, Vermont, to visit a recommended monument manufacturer.  The granite chosen was ruined by the local sculptor, so the company then sent to Italy for a sculptor.  Working from a negative of a snapshot taken of the John Crawford, the Italian artist completed the monument.  When the tombstone arrived at the Lima depot, two wagons were fastened together, with heavy timbers laid across them, and pulled by four horses to transport the stone to the cemetery on the east edge of Lima.  A worker from the factory accompanied the piece and stayed to assist in setting it up.  The work was completed and the create removed in 1908 or 1909 (by Emily Swartz, long time Fayette area resident of the early/mid 1900's/BZ).

The view to the SE, past the John Crawford monument is across the Volga River bottoms. 
The very first mill attempt, never completed, was at a point at the top center of this picture. 
Andrew Jackson Hensley then finished a first generation sawmill about 600 yards upstream to the right of the picture.
The entire Volga valley area through Westfield, Fayette, Albany, Frog Hollow, Lima, down to Wadena was a very attractive early place to the first settlers due to the abundance of fresh, fast flowing water.  The hills had very abundant large oak-hickory-maple stands for lumber and fuel.  The valleys and bottoms supplied reasonably rich cropland.

All of my direct surnames were very early pioneers into Fayette Co, generally in the mid 1850's.  Growing up in Fayette and trekking the hills, prairies, streams throughout the county when the small villages and farms were so active and functional before the 1960's, the now lost history and memories of the pioneer generations and lifestyles from 1840-1960 continue to hold my interests.
