Allen Cemetery (and Church)
Carroll County, Ohio, Perry Twp, Section 22 of Twp 12, Range 5, located on the pioneer homestead farm of  Joseph Allen, 1786-1854, and wife Sarah Manchester Allen, 1792-1870

....Sarah Manchester Allen was the driving influence behind the Allen Church, Cemetery, School, on the eastern edge of their 320 acre, original 1822/1823 land entry in Sec 22, Harrison (Carroll) Co, Ohio. Sarah was the Grand-daughter of Samuel Cranston, the three time Governor of Rhode Island.
....In the first half of the 1800s' the Harrison/Carroll Co. area, like most pioneer farming "communities" was a very enclosed "neighborhood" of a few families, breaking new ground to farm and make a living.  Family and community work was hard and shared.  Manufactured goods few, with nearly every commodity produced within a short distance of the farm "community."
....The offspring of many of these families migrated together into Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa and in the next generation after that to the west.  The relationships started to expand out after Ohio.  Ohio was one of the last tight family communities.  The villages of Perrysville, Kilgore, New Rumley, Scio were near.  The land in the area had not been scoured by the last glaciations.  The terrain was timbered hills with small stream valleys running down to the larger rivers. The easiest land to break for agriculture was on the hills, but the best land for crop production in the stream prairie grass bottomlands.
....There was a close relationship and marriage of the surnames around the Allen Church:  Allen, Amos, Cameron, Creal, Custer, Gladden, Hendricks, Kirby, Mook, Phillips, Pittenger, Robinson, Sherman, Swales, Taggart, Thompson, Watkins, Webb, and others.

....I am researching the Thompson's and most of the early pioneers in the New Rumley, Perrysville, Kilgore triangle, of the Harrison and Carroll Co, Ohio. area related to the surnames in Allen Cemetery.  Many of these surnames removed to my "hometown" area  of Fayette County, Iowa, specifically in the area from Brush Creek (Arlington) and to the north around Fayette, West Union, Elgin, Wadena.

Allen Cemetery
in Section 22, of Carroll County, Ohio,
located on the pioneer homestead farm of
Joseph Allen, 1786-1854, and wife Sarah Manchester Allen, 1792-1870

Information Regarding Allen Cemetery
....The cemetery in 2000 is on Castle Ridge Road, 8 tenths of a mile from the intersection of Ohio State Route 164 and Castle Road.  The cemetery is surrounded by trees next to a cow pasture and somewhat rundown.  A row of evergreens and a farm gate guard the entrance, and crops may hide it from view.  There once was no fence around the place.  In 1995 and many times earlier the cows came in and literally destroyed the place, hence the many downed stones. The cemetery is under the care of Perry Township Trustees.
....The cemetery was read by Linda Gernert Houyouse in 1994, for the Carroll County Genealogical Society.  Reading is by row from front to back, and site left to right from the front gate.  The information database is a blend of data copied by Linda and from my FTM files and data (BZ).
....Allen Church or Woodpecker Church - Joseph Allen and wife Sarah Manchester gave land (Carroll Co., Deed Book #8,  Record #4, Page 511) 15 Jan 1845 to the trustees of the Christian Church at the Dining Fork of the Conotton (river).  Trustees named were: John Hendrix, Jacob Gladden and Gabriel Thompson.  The land being a part of the northwest quarter of section 22 in twp. 112, range 5 containing 144 rods.

A little history----

….In 1817, Andrew and Sarah Denbow Thompson removed from Harford Co, Maryland with their family of nine children, and initially settled in the pioneer log village of New Rumley, Harrrison Co, Ohio, several miles to the SE of where the Allen family would settle in 1823.  Andrew Thompson was about 15 years older than Joseph Allen, and thus Andrew's son's, including  Zach 1 Caleb would be of a similar generation as Joseph, but older offspring of Andrew Thompson would marry younger offspring of Joseph Allen.
…Andrew’s second son Zach 1 Caleb Thompson married Priscilla Albaugh in 1822, and they settled together with the oldest brother Gabriel Thompson, who married  Elizabeth Allen, 1811-1866, 1st child of Joseph and Sarah Manchester Allen, on a farm created on government land.
….Joseph Allen had journeyed from Pennsylvania to Harrison County in 1822 to claim government land.  He returned to Pennsylvania and in 1823, brought Sarah Manchester Allen, with the family to Ohio and settled on an original entry of 320 acres of government land in Sec 22, T12, R5, of Harrison County (later Carroll Co). The Allen’s had migrated from Washington Co, Pennsylvania.  Before that Joseph Allen was in Otsego County, New York.
….Sarah apparently was very concerned about the salvation of her neighbors, so much so that her husband, Joseph offered to build a log church for her. Jonathan Hendricks Sr. helped to erect this log church, and were probably assisted by at least some members of the families of  Andrew Thompson, Benjamin Amos, Samuel Webb, Thomas Taggart, John Phillips, John Watkins, William Cameron, Thomas Tomlinson clans, as they representative of the older family burials in Allen Cemetery.
….In 1828 Zachariah Thompson in his own log home just to the immediate west of the Allen farm and within a mile of the Church site, confessed Christ as his Savior and was baptized and joined the ‘Christian Connection'. This is the proof of a society of Christians, which means a church, as early as 1828, and it is not likely that Sarah Manchester waited 5 years after she settled in this community (neighborhood of farms, craftsman, family, friends) to establish a Church (she probably started ‘church’ meetings very soon after arrival in Harrison Co, Ohio, in 1823.

....In 1848 Zachariah 1 Caleb Thompson, son of Andrew, was ordained a minister of the Allen Christian Church.  Zach 1 would continue his ministry at Allen and in the Christian Church in Brush Creek, Fayette Co, Iowa.  The Church was already established in 1858,  only 4 years after his son's arrival in the area.  Zach 1 removed to join them in 1865, the same year the church put up its first building, a frame structure 30+x40+ft.  Zach 1, and all of the people around the Allen Church were farmers, along with some becoming skilled craftsmen in various trades. They would continue similar skills in Iowa.
….Gabriel Thompson, a younger brother of Zach 1 and Josiah Thompson, married Elizabeth Allen, the oldest daughter of Sarah Manchester Allen. Gabriel was also known as a very religious man, proving that Sarah Manchester Allen had left the imprint of her saintly efforts on him.
….In 1845, Joseph and Sarah Manchester Allen deeded the land for the Allen Church to Trustees of the Christian Church on the Dining Fork of the Conotton River , John Hendricks Sr., Jacob Gladden, and Gabriel Thompson.
….It was in the northwest quarter of Section 22 of Township 12 in Range 5, where the Old Allen Log Church stood, later to be replace with a frame building. In 1960, all that was left was the old Allen Cemetery, sometimes known as Woodpecker Cemetery

 Allen Church Influences other congregations.

.......Zachariah 1 Caleb and Priscilla Albaugh Thompson's son's William, Samuel 1 and Morris J. 1, would remove to a government tract in Fairfield Twp, Fayette Co, Iowa in 1854.  In 1855, brother Eli would join the first three brothers.  By 1865, when Zach 1 Caleb and Priscilla Albaugh Thompson removed to Brush Creek, Fairfield Twp, Fayette Co, Iowa, nearly all of Zach's children were located within about ten miles of each other, with Brush Creek being the center of the Thompson Clan and other Ohio surnames.
....One of the first and strongest churches in the pioneer village of Brush Creek (Arlington in 1895) was the Christian Church established in 1858 by pioneers surnames from Ohio.  In 1865, the year Zach 1 removed to Brush Creek, the Christian group erected the first church building (32x45).   Zach 1, an ordained preacher of the Allen Christian Church  preached in the Brush Creek Christian Church, its members including all of the Thompson's and related Ohio surnames.   A second framed Christian Church was built in the in the about 1896 and still stands in great repair and use on the Main Street business area of Arlington, Iowa. (bz/2001)

....The Pittenger family pioneered the Jewett, Ohio Methodist Church.  Gabriel and Elizabeth Allen Thompson's daughter's Lydia A. married Henry Pittenger, while her sister Antoinette Thompson married Henry's brother Samuel Pittenger. Thus a close relationship between area surnames of Thompson, Pittenger, Allen, Albaugh, Kirby, Shambaugh and other pioneers of Harrison (Carroll) County, Ohio.  The "fires" of the Allen church had spread to the nearby community of Jewett, Ohio and throughout the area.
