Westfield Township Occupations in 1878
Individuals living around the town of Fayette, or within and around West Albany and Lima

the HISTORY OF FAYETTE COUNTY, IOWA 1878,pp 686-692

The Albany Bridge was built in the mid 1860's and thus in use at the time of the 1878 Biographical List. Almost all of the men on the list would have crossed this bridge in their travels between the villages of Fayette, West Albany, and Lima.  Those of us old enough to remember Albany, called it just that. However, it would appear that the Village was referred to as West Albany, as no place in the list is just Albany used.  You are looking upstream on the Volga.  Fayette is about five miles away if you walk the ice.  Hiram Marvin moved his mill from Frog Hollow Creek about a mile upstream from this point.  Main Street of West Albany is just a mile up the road on your right.  There is a major grist mill and chair factory to your back about  3/4 mile.  Lima is another 2 miles downstream from West Albany.  Both villages by 1878 have become agricultural boom town for the time, mainly because of the increased commerce opened up by the railroads serving  the township by the mid 1870's.  Goods can now be shipped in and out of the relatively remote region.  Travelers move easily now, compared to the "stage line" days.  Compared to other areas of the county, these are relatively good times in Westfield Twp.  Times of small farms, businesses, and craftsmen.  The lifestyle continued until about WWII, and then the rapid decline of small farm rural America accelerated, with Westfield Twp. entering a new era.  However, "the Rivers Still Flow."

I have placed the 382 Surnames are listed in the "1878 History of Fayette County" in the biographical section marked Fayette and Westfield Townships, on a database so they can be sorted by surname, occupation, etc. In the future I may add people in the surrounding townships of interest to the Fayette area.  There was no such township in Fayette County, as Fayette was always in Westfield Township, named after the first village in the Valley, just 3/4 mile to the west of Main Street Fayette.  Thus this section of the old book refers in general to the heads of household living within the Fayette Valley that is known today, 2000.  Some occupations are not listed Not all people listed would have been a head of a household, as a "laborer" was often a young male in his late teens, early twenty's who was still living with the parents but out working for a farmer, builder, sawyer, etc.  The list does give a valid picture of what was going on in Westfield Twp.  four years after the railroad created a new era of transportation and commerce in the county.  One line came from Brush Creek up through Fayette and on to Calmar.  Another line ran from Wadena through the Volga River Valley to between Lima and West Albany, then on to West Union and north.  The first list is by Surname, followed by the exact same data filtered out by Occupation.  There obviously are unlisted people, as by this time Westfield Twp. had a brewery, more millers, lumbermen, quarry and lime kiln men, and other occupations, but still the list gives a very good idea of occupations types and  of the numbers of various craftsmen, carpenters, blacksmiths, merchants, grocers, butchers, leatherworkers, etc. The digital pictures of Fayette and Westfield Township in the biographical links will have all of the "1878" info in the book.

Westfield Township, Fayette Co., Iowa in 1878
Surnames
listed in "1878 History of Fayette County"  for Westfield Township.  The men in the town of Fayette are listed first followed by men out on the farms and also some in West Albany and Lima.  On another page, the Fayette residence have been isolated out.  Both of these villages has many other merchants and craftsmen in them, thus the biography list in the 1878 History of Fayette County is not complete for any areas.  There were 382 individuals mentioned in Westfield Twp.  (Drop down the page to the Occupation List)

Frog Hollow--View from the top of the hill leading down to Albany and Lima  Hiram Marvin built his first mill on Frog Hollow Creek at the base of the hill in the top of the picture.  There was not enough water flowing in the Creek to support good milling, so undaunted he picked up and moved to a mill sight on the Volga which would end up about one mile above the 1860's Albany Bridge. This mill he ran with his son for a number of years until he would trade some land and resources for the property at the north end of the Fayette Bridge, which would then become the sight that most Fayette people think of as "Marvin's MIll."
