Configure your Newsgroups with N.S. - Lesson4
Newsgroup setup continued
- First we need to start by opening Netscape Navigator,
this should be on our Desktop or under Start, Programs, Netscape. Once the
program is open look for the communication icons, which should be at the
bottom right corner of the open browser window or may be open within view
when program is launched.
-
is the icon bar you will need to identify at the bottom right corner within
Netscape. The icon we are going to be using is the Callout bubbles
,
which will in turn bring up the Newsgroup configuration section for Netscape
Navigator.
- Next you will want to click on the Edit, Preferences,
then look for the item called Mai & Newsgroups.
Open this collapsed area if need be, then click on Newsgroup Servers . If
you see this section appear on your screen fine job, otherwise try it again
by following the steps above.
- Next click on the Add button
on the right side of the open dialog box currently viewing. You will then be
asked a series of questions starting with naming the News Server as shown in
this next shot.
This is where you would enter the name of your ISP's news server. I will
apply the new.golden.net for demonstrating this configuration with Netscape.
Please contact your ISP if you are unsure of the name they use to their news
server.
Entered
within the field.
- Next you are asked to identify the port (doorway) the
news server can be connected on. The default port should be 110
,
which can remain this number. If your ISP would require a different port
number they should inform you of such a number change.
- That's it? Yep that's it! You should see in the dialog
area a image showing the news server setup, similar to this shot.
Now click OK
and
you should see the server appear on the left-side of your screen.
- Now let's go find some newsgroups we cam subscribe with.
On the left-side of your highlight the news-server name you have created again
using news.golden.net for this example.

- Once highlighted Right-click on the news-servers name
and select Subscribe to Newsgroups.
Highlight Subscribe to Newsgroups and another window should appear
showing/displaying a list of all the Newsgroup categories allotted on this
named server.
- I have selected one as a demonstration, which shows the
news-servers name and the Newsgroup I am subscribing with. Note the Blue
checkmark
showing
all related newsgroups, which have been actively subscribed with. It is
possible to click adjacently under the Subscribed title the newsgroups you
wish to activate and clicking again will deactivate the selected group.
Checkmark on or checkmark off.

- You will also note on the right side of your
display Newsgroup window area buttons named as follows
,
which you could also use to activate or deactivate categories of interest.
You select either method you wish to use.
- Finally once this has occurred the method for
displaying, reading and replying are exactly the same from when using
Internet Explorer. Have fun! Subscribe and un-Subscribe to several
Newsgroups, it will be very easy to get rid of them, just highlight and hit
the DEL key. Plus this is also a great method for practicing your newly
formed skills.
- There may be other browser and plenty of other
News-Servers on the Internet, try doing a search for Newsgroup or News
Severs on on of the several Search Engines when you have acquired the proper
skills to do so.
