Miss Pickles

Miss Pickles is a true miracle kitty. She came into my life quite unexpectedly, but looking back at the series of events, I believe her destiny was foretold in the stars.

I was volunteering with a local humane group at the time. We had spent the previous week scrambling to fill out paper work and be approved to particiapte in the North Shore Animal League's National Adopt-a-thon, which was being held at our local PETsMART. Up until the very last minute we didn't know if we would be able to participate, so that was the first piece of luck for Miss Pickles. Actually that's not true, the first piece of luck was when her rescuer heard her cries.

Miss Pickles rescuer had gone to take some garbage to her trash can a couple of nights before the Adopt-a-thon. When she lifted the garbage can lid she heard some pitiful mewing. Inside her garbage can was a red plastic bag that she had not put there. Inside this bag was Miss Pickles, two weeks old, lying half unconscience among the eviscerated remains of her 4 siblings. Her rescuer immediately scooped Pickles up and phoned the local sheriff's office to report this brutal crime. An officer was sent to investigate and he removed the remains of the other kittens. When her rescuer asked the officer what she should do with Miss Pickles he replied, "I don't care, I hate cats anyway." So her rescuer did the best she could for the next couple of days keeping Pickles warm and fed, but she could not commit to long term care.

Saturday arrived and there we all were. Spit shined and ready to do some serious adoptions on our first PETsMART day. All of our wonderful kittens were playing in their show cages, our pups were frisking around the store when in walks Miss Pickles' rescuer. She was there to buy some more formula and see if any of the rescue groups would be able to help. Our booth was located at the very back of the store, because we were the last to sign up. There were probably 6 or 8 other agencies there that day. Miss Pickles rescuer walked right past them all making a beeline for me.
