Swollen Members target rock fans

This weekend you might be as likely to see Swollen Member's Prevail hanging out with the athletes as the musicians.

"I'm quite, for lack of a better word, an extreme sports enthusiast -- stage diving is not my only health risk," Prevail says from Vancouver, where he is resting after breaking his ribs while BMXing.

"If I get good enough in the next couple of years you may see me on a different platform."

His ribs should be healed by his group's show tomorrow, so people in the front rows better watch out, he warns cryptically.

"Tell people to wear hard hats and wet suits," he says.

Other than breaking his ribs, this year has been great for Prevail and his musical partner Mad Child. Swollen Members won a best rap recording Juno Award for their 2001 album Bad Dreams and four MuchMusic Video Awards for the Fuel Injected video.

"I think we've been pretty lucky, a couple of things have kind of culminated together, and it's been a real snowball sort of effect for us," he says. "I think the first Juno (for their debut Balance) set it off and really peaked awareness not only on the streets, but in the industry as well."

Although they are a hip-hop group, Swollen Members play loads of shows with rock bands and work hard at winning over fans who might not be there to see them.

"We have an alternate energy than a lot of other rock groups do and I think because of the backgrounds of music we all grew up on, we really feed off the energy of what rock can deliver," Prevail says.

Swollen Members are putting the finishing touches on their third album, Monsters in the Closet, which will be released Sept. 24.
