Swollen Members Enlist Furtado

By Karen Bliss - Rolling Stone.com

Nelly Furtado has recorded "Breath" with Vancouver hip-hop group Swollen Members for their next album, Monsters in the Closet, due September 24th in Canada. A U.S. deal is currently in the works. "She worked some magic on the song," says Prevail, one of the group's three MCs. Prevail and MC Moka Only first met Furtado in Victoria, British Columbia, over a decade ago. "We used to hang out and walk around and freestyle everywhere. She was the mad freestyler," Prevail recalls.

While the Swollen Members -- who released their second album, Bad Dreams, last year -- toured with Furtado in Canada earlier this year and appear in her video for "Shit on the Radio," they hadn't recorded together prior to "Breath." "We had sent her some instrumentals of beats that [DJ/producer] Rob the Viking had done and she had mentioned that she had liked this particular one, so we went into the studio," says Prevail.

The track was cut at Vancouver's Hipposonic Studios in June with engineer Roger Swan and Rob the Viking co-producing. Prevail, Mad Child and Moka Only all rhyme and Furtado sings. "It was very cool because we went out for dinner first and hung out and then we went to the studio at about midnight," Prevail says. "Everybody was kind of tired, but we stayed in the studio until seven in the morning and just made the most amazing song."
