This is the bunker area and was used during WW II for training I believe.  Off to the right of the right hand bunker is the trail for the upper loop.  I walked over to the trail and using the   radio we carry notified the others that Barb and I would only do one loop and that they should enjoy themselves.

If you can imagine facing the sign in the picture on the last page and doing an about face you'd then be facing the trail  we would be taking.  It once was an old army road and at one time was paved with crushed coral.  Much of the coral can still be seen.  I you do this hike just walk all the way to the bottom of the hill.  Do not take the trail to the left about 1/2 way down.  At the bottom of the hill is Kahana Stream which must be forded.  I took no pictures this year but if you go back to last years pictures you can see the crossing.  This year I tied a rope across to help.  It wasn't needed today as the water at its deepest was only to my knees.  If it rained heavy and the stream really got to flowing then it might come in handy.
