Cages

To most people the subject of cages is a difficult one, But it's not as hard as you may think. There are to basic types of cages: aquariums and wire cages. Both  are good to keep your rat in but they also have some pro's and con's to them. To make it easy on you and me I decided to list those pro's and con's so you can come to your own conclusion.

AQUARIUMS

Pro's

  • There good at keeping out drafts, which is especially good for sick or hairless rats.
  • It keeps bedding from getting all over the place.
  • Safe for babies because they can't climb out between the bars as in a wire cage.
  • Very good for rats feet.

Con's

  • Most people keep there rats in an aquarium that is to small
  • Can be very hard to clean. The larger ones especially are heavy and fragile. It's a good idea to clean the tank every week.
  • Limited ventilation. That's why you should change bedding often. To not do so can cause a dangerous build up of gas.
  • Lacks height and levels that most wire cages have. Is hard to attach toys to the cage.

WIRE CAGES

Pro's

  • Better ventilated that helps reduce respiratory problems.
  • Provides climbing exercise to keep rats healthy.
  • Gives rats much more space to climb. play, and stay healthy.
  • More room for toys.
  • Easier to clean and more light weight then a aquarium.
  • Less expensive

Con's

  • More exposed to drafts.
  • If the bars are not the right size rats can slip thru (generally 1/2" by 1 or 2" is safe for any size rat; larger spacing are dangerous for little ones).
  • Wire floors can cause health problems with the rats feet. So it is a good idea to cover floors with plastic Plexiglas.
  • The zinc in the bars of most rat cages can cause health problems for the rat over time.
  • Bedding tends to fall out from in-between wires of the cage making a big mess.
