In Hindu origin, in which dance signifies creation, dance traveled to Indonesia were it found different meanings and expression. The Indonesian dances that existed for centuries are Balinese and Javanese. The first evidence of these dances could be found in a Borobuddur Temple, in central Java. This temple was constructed in the 8th century A.D. The Balinese dance began somewhere in the 16th century during the era of the great Hindu kingdoms. It is tightly connected to religion.

The shorter and non-religious dances were formed from the old forms. Javanese dance was originally a court dance, performed during ceremonies in the court. Many new dances were created at this beginning of century inspired from the more modern form.

         

 

Tari Pajembrama

Tari Pajembrama is a Balinease dance. it is a dance of welcome. It's performed in Bali at the beginning of an artistic ceremony and to welcome the visitors and to pay them homage with a rain of flower petals.

   

Oleg Tambulilingan

Oleg Tambulilingan is a Balinease dance. It is a dance that evokes the love between to lovers. This dance is created in 1950's, it is one of the last creations of a dance teacher, Mario. 

 

     

Tarunajaya

This is another Balinease dance that expresses the character of a young man who is proud and sure of himself. This young boys character changes quickly, sometimes he is smiling, angry, mad, shy or provocative. This dance is known mostly for the fast movements and dynamic music.

 

        

 

Tari Belibis

This is a new Balinese dance creation. It represents young herons with their mother in the middle of pond flying here and there looking for food.

 

 

 

Wira Pertiwi

This is a new creation from , it created a choreographer, Bagong Kusiardio. The composition of Balinease and Javanese dance inspired him.

 

      

 

Jaipongan

This is a dance from Sunda region in west Java. The music and singing have Arabic influences. Originally this dance was performed at weddings and in the villages. This dance became very popular and is performed for diverse occasions.
