In 1994, astronomers used the Hubble space telescope and found the first convincing evidence that a black hole exists. They found that an object of 2.5 billion to 3.5 billion solar masses must be present at the center of the galaxy M87. A German astronomer, Karl Schwazchild, developed the black hole concept. He said that gravitation severely modifies space and time near black hole and time slows down relative to the distant observers but inside the black hole, time stops completely. English physicist, Stephen Hawking, suggested that many back holes are formed in early universe. They could compose a significant fraction of the total mass of the universe. Any early black holes weighing less than a few thousand million metric tons have vanished but heavier ones may remain. A direct image of black hole was thought to be captured just this January in year 2000.
lights that travel sraight towards the black hole gets sucked in, while light that passes outside its event horizon is bent. like in the above picture...
From the viewer's point of view, the star they see is not where the star acttually is. It is because the bending of light. The stars appear to be displaced. the "bending of light" factor does not only apply to black holes, it apply to any other stars with similar mass. The effect was noticed during a solar eclipse where light from distant stars were bent by our own sun.
This is also one of the discovery of the black hole.
