Chapter 31

Kid stopped his friend with a firm hand, and Jimmy followed his eyes, wondering what he had seen.

"What, Kid?" he asked the same moment he saw them; Buck and a young woman he had never seen before were kissing very briefly before the latter ran toward a big white house.

"Wonder what that was about," Kid murmured under his breath.

"Wonder who that was," Jimmy said aloud while trying to catch up with Buck.

"Hey, Buck!" Kid shouted and the Indian froze.

He turned around slowly. He knew he wasn't mistaken, that voice belonged to Kid.

"Buck, wait up!" Jimmy called and ran toward him.

"Kid, Jimmy," Buck murmured in reply and expected them both to lash out on him. But they didn't move; they studied their friend with skeptical eyes and finally met his wary gaze.

"Where you been, Buck?" Jimmy asked.

"What you doin' back here?" Kid asked and took a careful step closer.

"Visitin'," Buck lied and gazed quickly over his shoulder, stating Cami was out of sight already. Buck figured though that neither of his friends had missed her.

"Why'd you run away like that?" Jimmy demanded to know.

Buck took his time before answering. "I needed to get away," he replied and hoped his friends would understand. Though he knew they were very likely to question that also.

"Get away?!" Jimmy shot back and Kid had to step in between.

"Easy, Jimmy, let him explain."

"Well?" Jimmy probed and Buck sighed deeply.

"I couldn't tell you, you wouldn't have understood anyway!" he cried. "I needed to get away and think," he said after calming down somewhat.

"Think?! You can't do that around the station?!!" Jimmy was furious and Buck had been expecting it. He just never thought of how to handle it.

"I'm sorry," he whispered and turned to leave.

Kid stopped him abruptly with a hand in the chest. "Don't walk away from us, Buck. You owe us an explanation."

"But I've told you already!" Buck cried and turned back to Jimmy.

His friend seemed to have controlled himself finally. "What did you have to think about that was so important?" he asked and Buck nodded to himself.

"Cami."

"Who?" Four questioning eyes sought his face and he had to turn away to keep from blushing.

"Cami Johnson."

"That girl?" Jimmy asked and pointed toward the big white house. Buck nodded.

"Yeah. I had to think about that girl," he answered.

There was a silent pause between the trio and none of them knew what to say until Jimmy began shuffling his feet.

"A girl, huh?" he smiled mischievously and Buck chuckled too.

"Yeah," he nodded and stared at the dusty ground below is boots.

"Well?" Kid asked and Buck finally looked up again.

"Well," Buck started and glanced at Jimmy. "I'm done thinking!"

"I think we saw that," Kid chuckled and clapped Buck's back. "Congrats!"

"Thanks, but." Buck paused and sought the right words. "You can't tell anyone."

Jimmy and Kid frowned again. "Why not?"

"I mean it, not even Lou," Buck waved a warning finger at Kid. "It's a secret, for now anyway. Please."

Jimmy and Kid nodded at each other. "Alright," Kid agreed.

"We won't tell," Jimmy finished.
