Chapter 97
(a week later)
"I tell you what...Suzy's a bag of moods lately. I wonder how AJ puts up with her." Brian says.
"He loves her, that's why." Libby says sitting down next to Howie.
"Where are they anyway?" Sarah asks.
"She's in the bedroom bawling." Tiffany says.
"What? Why?" Brian and Howie ask.
"You know pregnancy; makes your cry for no reason. AJ's trying to calm her down." Tiffany says.
"Oh man, I dread having children. If it does that to a person; I don't know if I want to have any." Libby says.
They all kind of giggle.
AJ comes walking into the room.
"Well, is she OK?" Howie asks.
"She's resting." AJ says.
"Oh OK." Howie says looking back at his magazine.
AJ sits down and starts talking to Tiffany. Brian and Sarah are talking about something in a magazine. Libby is sitting there reading a magazine; as is Howie. Howie looks around at everyone. He thinks to himself: 'Now's as good a time as any.'
"Libby," Howie whispers, "follow me."
"Um..OK." Libby says laying down her magazine and following Howie towards Sarah's room.
Once in the room; Howie closes the door so that no one will listen.
"Why'd you want me to follow you?" Libby asks.
Howie walks over to her and kisses her deeply. She returns the kiss just as deep.
"Well, thank you. But that still doesn't answer my question." Libby says smiling.
"I want to...to ask you something." Howie says shyly.
"Go ahead." Libby says sitting down on the bed.
Howie sits down next to her.
"Well, ever since I met you I thought you were a great person and a beautiful girl." Howie says.
Libby blushes a bit.
"I want to know if you'll be my girlfriend; my steady girlfriend." Howie says.
Libby sits there for a couple minutes. She seems to be almost in shock; even though she'd been expecting this.
"Well?" Howie asks.
"Oh, of course I will Howie." Libby says.
Howie smiles and gives her a hug.
(in my room)
"I can't take this anymore. I swear, I won't make it. I have a little under three months to go; and I already feel like I'm going to die." I say to myself.
I rub my back. It hurts so badly; the weight of the babies is straining my back muscles.
I look down at my stomach. It's funny how it doesn't stick out like normal women's do. Don't be mistaken...it does stick out. But it's a lot smaller than most women's. The doctor told me that it's because I carry the babies mostly in my back (hence the back problem), and they don't show up as much.
"I can't just lay here; I'm too active for this." I say to myself.
I slowly get up off the bed (which isn't an easy task with a bulge in your way), and open the door. I can hear Libby and Howie talking in Sarah's room.
I open the door and they look at me.
"Hey girl." Libby says with a smile.
"Um...hey. What's with you smiley?" I ask.
Howie smiles at me.
"Well, Howie just asked me to be his girlfriend." Libby says.
I smile at both of them and say, "I'm happy for you guys."
"You don't look too happy." Howie says.
"When you're pregnant, a smile looks like a frown, and a frown looks like the devil reincarnate." I say walking out of the room.
They both laugh and follow me down the hall.
When AJ sees that I'm up he comes to my side.
"Honey, what are you doing up?" AJ asks as he walks me to the couch.
"I can't just lay in there; it's not me." I say.
AJ helps me sit down on the couch (sitting's hard to do with this bulge too).
"Well, you need to do more resting and less messing around. It's not good for you or the babies." AJ says.
"A little walk down the hall isn't going to hurt me AJ. It's not like I'm running a marathon or something." I say.
"I know, I just don't want something bad happening again." AJ says looking at the ground.
I think back...
"Oh man I'm cold." Howie says.
"So am I. Here, get close so we can get warm." I say moving towards Howie.
I put my arms around Howie and he puts one of his arms around me; cause he's still holding my hat down.
"This wind is making my eyes water." Howie says.
When I look at him, I see tears running down his face. I take my hand and whip them away just as AJ comes back up.
AJ looks at Howie and me. He sees one of Howie's arms around me, the other holding the back of my head (not noticing he's holding my hat on). He sees me with an arm around Howie and my hand touching his cheek. He also see that we are really close.
"What the hells going on here?!?" AJ yells........
I can tell AJ's about to hit Howie. AJ brings his fist back. I run up to him to stop him; he elbows me right in the stomach.
Tiffany yells, "Son of a...!"
I let out of yelp of pain; and AJ stops, stands up, and looks at me. I'm bent over holding my stomach. My face is of pure shock.
"Oh my God. I didn't mean...oh my God...I'm so sorry...I didn't mean to...honest. Oh God I'm sorry." AJ says putting his hand against my stomach.
I feel a sharp pain go through my stomach and I fall against AJ.
"Oh God AJ. Help me." I say as I start to slide to the ground.
AJ catches me and falls to the ground with me.
"Oh God what have I done?" AJ asks himself........
The doctor walks in the lobby and says, "Alexander McLean?"
AJ and Howie both jump up and run over to the doctor.
"Are you Alexander?" The doctor asks.
"Yes." AJ says.
"Sir, the reason your girlfriend is having pains is because she is in premature labor." The doctor says softly. "Now we're doing everything we can to stop it."
"What if you can't stop it?" AJ asks.
The doctor looks at the ground, then AJ, and says, "She'll loose the baby."
"Suzy? Suzy? Earth to Suz?" Libby says waving her hand in front of my face.
"Huh? What? Oh, sorry. I was just thinking about something." I say.
"I asked if you want Howie and I to pick you up something at the store." Libby says.
"Oh, well...get me a magazine or something." I say.
"What? No Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream? Are you OK?" Howie asks.
"Oh hush; you can get me some of that too." I say with a smile.
With that Howie and Libby walk out.
"What's with them?" Sarah and Brian both ask.
"Oh, you didn't know?" I ask.
"Know what?" Tiffany asks.
"Oh, they're...um...Howie asked her to be his girlfriend." I say looking at Tiffany.
Everyone smiles except her. She just looks down at the ground for a minute and then grabs a magazine and starts reading it.
I look at AJ. He knows what I'm thinking.
