Chapter 98
(Three weeks later)
It's been about two months since Howie and Libby's first date. They've been going out for three weeks now; and everything seems to be going fine between them (I have no idea how wrong I am). Libby has been acting kinda depressed lately though. I've asked her about it; but she just changes the subject.
(inside Howie and Kevin's)
The whole gang is here to have a cook out where we can all just hang out (like we don't already) and mess around.
Right now we're all doing separate things.
Kevin, Shena, Nick, Tiffany, AJ, and I are playing poker (not for money of course).
Brian and Sarah are playing Nintendo.
Howie and Libby are watching TV.
(Howie and Libby)
Howie and Libby are intently watching "Romeo and Juliet" on TV.
While watching, Howie notices that the story is somewhat of a croc.
"This is kind of a screwed up story ya know." Howie says.
"Why do you say that?" Libby asks confused.
"They're love was totally based on the physical appearance of the person. Although they turned out to find true love in each other; they didn't even take the chance to get to know each other. They just jumped into the situation head first. And look how it turned out; their lives were destroyed." Howie says.
"Howie? Is something bothering you dude?" AJ asks from across the room.
"No, I'm fine." Howie says.
"Are you sure?" Libby asks.
"Yeah, lets just go back to watching to movie." Howie says.
As they watch the movie some more; Howie's mind begins to wander.
He thinks to himself: 'Gosh, I didn't realize it; but that's Libby and my relationship. We got together way too fast. I mean, we slept together the first night we went out! Oh God, this is too much, too fast. I can't deal with this. I can't be in a relationship like this.'
"I'm going to go for a walk." Howie says standing up.
"Let me go with you, I need to talk to you anyway." Libby says standing up next to him.
Howie slowly pushes her down on the couch; then he sits down.
"Libby, no." Howie says.
"Huh? Why? What's wrong Howie?" Libby asks.
"I think that this isn't going to work." Howie says slowly.
"What's not going to work?" Libby asks.
"Our....our relationship." Howie says. (stop crying Libby...I know you are)
"What? But why Howie?" Libby asks getting upset.
Trying to be quiet Howie says, "Follow me."
They walk down the Howie's room.
"Libby don't you understand. Our lives are just like that of Romeo and Juliet. We jumped into this way too fast; and the damage is already done." Howie says.
"But, I don't see anything wrong with our relationship. I thought we were doing just fine." Libby says near tears.
"Look Libby, it's just not going to work. If we don't stop it now; we'll just end up screwing up our friendship as well." Howie says.
Libby starts crying.
"I'm sorry." Howie says.
He gives her a kiss on the cheek and walks out of the room.
(The living room)
Howie comes storming through the house, runs out the door, and slams it.
We all look at each other.
"I've learned from experience to just let things cool down." AJ says.
We go back to playing cards.
Nick and Tiffany can't shake the feeling that they want to help out.
"I'm going to go talk to Libby." Nick says.
"OK, I'll attempt to talk to Howie." Tiffany says.
(Nick)
Nick walks down the hall to Howie's room. He can hear Libby crying. Nick peaks around the door and sees Libby on her knees with her face in her hands crying. Nick's heart sinks. He can't stand to see her hurting like this.
Nick walks over to Libby, sits on the floor next to her, and puts his arms around her.
She starts crying even harder.
"Shush...it's OK. I'm here for you." Nick says holding her tightly.
"Oh God Nick, he left me." Libby says through her tears.
"Aw, I'm sorry Libby...I really am." Nick says comforting Libby.
"Nick, thank you for being such a good friend." Libby says looking at Nick.
"Remember, I'll always be here for you. No matter what." Nick says.
Libby cries a little.
"And don't you worry about Howie; everything will work out for the best in the end. Whatever happens; it's meant for the best." Nick says.
"I thought he loved me though." Libby says.
"Maybe his love for you was as a friend; and he's just realizing it now. It's better it happened now; then farther along in the relationship." Nick says.
"His timing couldn't be any worse." Libby says.
"Huh? What?" Nick asks looking at Libby.
(Tiffany)
Tiffany finally catches up with Howie when he stops to sit on a sidewalk bench.
"Good God Howie, you sure know how to run." Tiffany says standing in front of Howie.
She can see a couple tears in his eyes.
"Oh Howie, what's wrong?" Tiffany asks sitting down next to Howie.
"I broke up with Libby." Howie says looking down at the ground.
"Why?" Tiffany asks confused.
"Because I just...we weren't...our relationship wasn't write. I mean, we jumped into it way too fast." Howie says.
"Well, I mean, I know that you guys kinda jumped the gun when it came to...how do I put this lightly...hellos." Tiffany says smiling.
Howie smiles.
"But, I thought that didn't make a difference." Tiffany says.
"At first I thought it didn't either. But come to find out it does; it means everything to me. I'm not saying that I think Libby is a bad person; cause she's not. And any person that says she is will answer to me." Howie says.
"OK OK, but?" Tiffany says smiling.
"Oh sorry. But I think doing what we did screwed things up. We didn't wade in the water; we just dived in." Howie says.
"And what? Now your all wet?" Tiffany asks laughing.
"Well, I guess...in a word I mean." Howie says.
"I'm sorry about all this Howie; I really am." Tiffany says.
"Thanks for being here for me Tiff. You're a real sweetie." Howie says hugging Tiffany.
(Later on that day)
Brian, Sarah, Shena, Kevin, Howie, Libby, Tiffany, AJ, and I are outside Howie and Kevin's place goofing around. The guys are playing football; Tiffany and Sarah have joined them.
Shena and Libby are sitting on the ground talking.
I'm sitting in a chair; hurting. I can't believe this is happening to me. I mean, don't get me wrong, I want to have these babies. AJ and I both love them dearly. But I cannot wait to have them out of me.
"You OK Suzy?" Shena asks.
"Yeah, I think. I'm just hurting...as usual." I say.
"Gosh; I'm sorry girl. Wish I could do something for ya." Shena says.
"It's OK. It'll be over in a while." I say.
I look over at Libby. She's starring at the ground and picking at grass. Earlier, Libby had told me about her and Howie's break up. I feel so bad for her; she really does love him. But, I feel something else is bothering her. I know she's upset...but not this bad.
"Lib, what's wrong?" I ask.
"Nothing." Libby says, still starring at the ground.
"I think I'm going to go get something to drink for the guys." Shena says getting up and walking into the house.
I look at Libby for a while. I can tell something bothering her.
"Lib, just tell me what's wrong. You know you can't hide it from me." I say.
"NOTHING'S WRONG!!!!" Libby yells.
Everyone stops playing football and looks at us.
"I wouldn't get an attitude with me lil miss. I'm the one running off a gas tank full of hormones!" I yell.
Everyone looks startled. Shena runs out of the house to see what's going on.
"What's wrong?" Shena asks.
"Nothing that can't be handled." I say calmly.
"Hell yeah it's going to be handled!" Libby yells.
"Lib, did someone do something to you? What's wrong? You know I only want to help." I say trying to calm Libby down.
"Sure, whatever! You couldn't help; none of you could! You wouldn't know a thing about what I'm going through!" Libby yells.
"Libby, what's wrong?" Howie asks.
"I was going to tell you earlier but you were so intent on break up with me that I didn't get a chance!" Libby yells.
I set my hands on her shoulders and give her a sisterly look.
"Lib, your like a sister to me. Just tell me what's wrong; please." I say.
"I...I..." Libby starts to say.
"Come on, it's OK. You can tell me. You what?" I ask.
"I had a miscarriage." Libby says as she begins to cry.
Everyone looks around in shock.
