He still couldn't believe she'd named the baby Daniel. She had said Joshua seemed to baby-ish and Eric sounded like a name for a down-on-his-luck pop star wanna be, so she chose Daniel. Good, solid, if a little bit country, name for a boy.
He nervously fidgeted on the couch. His mother had become a bit more precautious with Jerry since she'd had her baby. She made it clear that she didn't want to see her little boy (who was practically a grown man) get in too deep with a girl with a child. Of course, the whole idea was absurd to Isaac. Jerry was his friend. That was it.
The doorbell rang, and Isaac jumped to get it. He was surprised, and found Skye standing there, smiling like an ox. "Where's Taylor?"
"Room," Isaac said, returning her smile and gesturing to something behind him. "You know the way."
She walked past him, and bounded up the stairs. He was just about to close the door when he heard, "WAIT!"
He paused, and opened it again. He saw Jocelyn Andrews running up to the door. Still getting out of the car were Josh and his girlfriend Racheal. He furrowed his brow.
"Zac in his room?" Jocelyn asked as she went in the door. Isaac watched with semi-amazement as she contintued to walk. He mumbled the affirmative after her quickly receding figure.
"You were all invited?" he asked Josh incredulously.
Josh grinned as he unlocked the trunk and lifted it. "We come baring gifts. Don't complain, o' mighty eldest Hanson brother."
"Ah!" Isaac laughed. "Gifts and their barers are always welcome here."
Isaac went out and helped them with a few of the packages that were in the trunk of the car. "You didn't have to bring anything, you know," he said quietly.
Josh shrugged. "Well, it's really just a few things that we wanted to give you a long time ago but never got around to giving, so..."
Racheal was holding a few Christmas bags in her hands, and waiting patiently. At last, she followed the two inside. Isaac told them they could put the gifts under the tree and that they could go on up to the bedroom. Taylor was there.
First, though, Josh stopped by the kitchen to tell Mrs. Hanson thank you for inviting them on such short notice.
Isaac sat back on the couch, waiting for Jerry. He noticed that it was half an hour past the time she said she would be there. He tried not to worry...too much.
"Stupid car seat," Jerry muttered. She undid the fasten on it, and gently picked Daniel out of it. She wrapped him in all the blankets that were in the back of her car. She sighed, and looked around. People were speeding by in their cars on the busy highway to get to their homes for the evening. 2 week old Daniel was not made for this weather, she thought, as she shivered herself from the cold.
She began to walk up the side of the road, holding Daniel to her chest. She knew it wasn't safe, but what choice did she have? Her car had broken down, and she couldn't get it started again.
She walked more quickly. She hoped that she could make it to the convenient store that she knew was right up the road maybe a mile without anything happening.
