Review:
If you were disappointed by Jet Li's Cradle 2 the Grave,
The One, Kiss of the Dragon and Romeo Must Die, then this period classic - Fong
Sai Yuk (known as The Legend in US) directed by Corey Yuen and starring the two
Wong Fei Hung (Jet Li and Vincent Zhao) is a masterpiece in all section - fun,
cool, action, good plot, interesting romance. This film though made back in
1993, is still one of my favourite movies and probably my favourite Jet Li's
movie. The chemistry between Jet Li and
Josephine Siao as mother and son is just the best I have seen on-screen, perhaps
bettering even many romantic movies.
Michelle Reis is also pretty and actually had a good believable couple look in
her and Li, but the highlights was the 2 magnificent choreographed fights
between two wushu master in Jet Li and Vincent Zhao. However I somehow preferred
their first fight than the second. Overall, Fong Sai Yuk as a movie was a great
instant success, from the HK$28 million from the Box Office to making a
not-as-good sequel, but to my point of view this is Corey Yuen's finest 109
minutes and showcasing Jet Li's comedic talents. If you haven't seen it, this is
a must for all action fans and a good start to HK cinema and what more; it
certainly won't disappoints.
