When I woke up this morning, I found Duo's bed empty. This was something that really surprised me. He normally never woke up before me and he really never did after a mission he had during the night. But I had barely time to think about this unusual event, because I found the answer seconds later directly on my bed.
First I could only make out a weird black mass beside my pillow. But then I discovered long ears and a light rose nose. At that moment the events of the night popped back in my head.
Duo, the mission, the bunny!
I gently reached for the little ball of fur and took it into my arms. It felt soft and warm. And the bunny didn't seem to be afraid. It was as if it was always living here and had known us for years. I stared at the bunny for a long time. It looked so weak and innocent. And so little.
Such little living things always remind me of the little girl, with her puppy. I know, it wasn't really my fault, but I always think I could have prevented it, if I had planned the mission more carefully.
But I can't make events undone, so the only thing I could do was protect all the other weak living beings. That's one of the main reasons why I allowed Duo to keep the bunny.
I looked at the soft brown eyes which stared at me with expectations.
"Are you hungry, little one?" I whispered at him and put him down onto the ground. "I think you have to wait a little more time. Duo is on his way buying what you will need."
I felt my lips curling to a smile, when I spoke out Duo's name. The bunny of course didn't reply to my words. It just continued to look at me with his soft brown eyes.
Kamisama I never thought a thing like this would manage to let me melt away. I shook my head still smiling.
"You are well suited to Duo, little one", I told him. "You just look like him when he wants something really bad. OK, then let's see, if we have something in the fridge for you."
I went of to the kitchen and opened the door to the fridge to look what was in. It wasn't really much. To be exact, there was only milk, some eggs and the rest of a salad.
Have to go shopping!
I made a note in my mind and took the salad out of the fridge. When I went back into the living room, little bunny was still sitting where I left him and stared at me with curious hungry eyes. I gave him the first three leafs with my own hands. Then I put the rest onto the ground. It wasn't very much salad so I didn't have to fear, little bunny could eat too much.
"I have to go shopping now or Duo will starve, like I know him", I explained the little thing. I didn't think it would do really bad things when nobody was there to keep an eye on the bunny. Although I was sure Duo would be back in some minutes. So I left the apartment we shared with no bad feelings.
I expected the shopping wouldn't take much time. We had a supermarket in the same street and anyways we normally never cook. We just eat fast food or pizza. Duo loves pizza.
But then I went along the shelves this time, I had a strange feeling all over my body. I didn't know why, but when I stood there in the middle of the supermarket, surrounded by all these food, I felt the strong urge to change some of our regular habits.
Why?
Because we aren't friends anymore. Our relationship changed. We kissed. And I for myself didn't kiss him for fun, because we were friends. I kissed him because I felt for Duo. I thought about my feelings for a long time. And I decided that Duo and I were more than just friends. There could be more than just friends and the kiss was the first step in this direction.
So, didn't this feeling I had in the supermarket mean, that we are now ready for another step?
But which step? Admit feelings? I am not good in showing feelings. I knew it, Quatre knew it and of course Duo knew it as well. But there are other ways to tell someone how much you like him. I never saw Duo eat meals he or one of our friends cooked. We are soldiers. We are used to not cook our meals. Mostly there wasn't time for cooking. But now after this mission we would have much time.
So I decided to cook something for Duo, something special. I left the supermarket half an hour later full with big bags.
When I arrived our apartment, I was first surprised of the view I had. As I thought Duo was home. But I didn't expect to see him running across the living room, cursing and shouting to the bunny. The things like pet food and the cage he bought for the bunny lay forgotten in a corner.
It was very hard for me to hide the smile, which wanted to come along my face. When Duo recognized me, he stopped immediately to welcome me back.
"Why don't you give him a name instead of calling him 'bunny'?" I asked as I crossed the room to the kitchen. Duo's face turned into a wild smile while he answered:
"Because I wanted to decide one together with you. Besides I am very happy you care for little bunny."
I just reached the kitchen door and turned around, facing him while I raised an eyebrow.
"Why are you thinking this?"
"Why do you know it's a 'he'?" he asked back. "And I am not blind."
He showed with his finger to the rest of the salad which still was lying on the ground. I decided to say nothing and went into the kitchen to put my bags on the table. But there I got another surprise and this one wasn't as funny as the first. The whole kitchen was a mess. Dishes were scattered everywhere.
Duo seemed to remember the mess in the kitchen, because before I could shout his name, his head popped into the kitchen, the bunny in his arms now.
"Duo, what is THIS?" I asked him, definitely not very happy. I knew Duo's talent to change every room into a big mass, but I didn't care as long as it was his room. But I didn't like the rooms we had to share to be a mess.
"Oh, I am really sorry, Heero", he said and showed his look that I always felt the urge to melt away to. Kamisama, how could this guy do this to me so easy?
"I", he blushed a little and it suited him damn sweet, "I wanted to cook something for you. To thank you for letting little bunny stay. And I had really great ideas what I could cook. So I took out the dishes I would need. But then I realized that we have no food at home. Only some eggs in the fridge and some rice in one of the shelves."
He sighed and put the bunny into his new cage he already prepared with sawdust and a bowl of water and rabbit food. Then he came back into the kitchen to continue speaking.
"So the only thing I can cook would be rice with eggs. Nothing really special. And moreover I saw little bunny started gnawing the sofa. So I tried to put him into the cage, but he seemed to have enough from cages. And that was the time then you arrived."
I stared at Duo in disbelief. He wanted to cook something for me? So he had the same idea as I? Now I was really sure to take the next step into our relationship. A smile came onto my face and I started to unpack my bags. To my amusement it was now Duo's turn to stare at me in disbelief.
"So... much... food", he stuttered. "What? Why?"
"To cook, you little baka", I answered him, still smiling. "What were you planning to cook?"
"Uhm, I was not really sure. What do you think of rice with vegetables, meat and this special Asian sauce I tasted last week in this restaurant? I am only not sure if I could cook exact this sauce."
He went through my bags while speaking.
"Cool everything I imagined is here now", he shouted happily. I put the dishes we wouldn't need back into the shelves and thought about the sauce Duo was speaking of.
"Hn, the sauce wouldn't be a problem", I told him then. "I know how to cook it. Please, give me one of the salads! I will wash and cut the vegetables and you can cook the rice."
Duo's eyes went big.
"You want to cook?" he stumbled confused.
"Because we had the same idea to the same time, wouldn't it be the best to cook together?" I explained and showed him a little smile.
"Heero!"
And before I could do anything, he fell around my neck and gave me an intensive kiss. It felt so good, I couldn't do anything to resist and start to kiss him back. Then we broke he grinned wildly.
"Ya know, you are really sweet, Hee-chan!"
I think my cheek got a little bit red, because Duo's grin became wider. It was one of the first times I got red. And the strange is, that only Duo had the ability to make me blush. Me, the perfect soldier, blushing like a little schoolgirl. Normally I would think it's embarrassing, but in Duo's presence I never felt that way. I always felt warm and safe. It's a nice feeling. A feeling I missed since I was a little boy.
In the last days I often realized how good it felt to be with Duo. I am very thankful we met and that I could stay on his side now. If I hadn't met him, I still would be as cold as I was originally.
My thoughts were interrupted, when Duo started to put water in the pot. After he finished with the water, I took his place to wash the vegetables. Duo sent me a sweet smile before he left his place for me and started to put the rice into the pot. While he cooked the rice, I finished washing the vegetables and sat down at the kitchen table to cut them. I didn't notice that Duo watched me all the time till he came to me and sat down on the chair next to me.
"Look, Heero, you cut them in the wrong way", he explained to me. I sent him a little glare before asking:
"And how do you think should I cut them?"
He smiled, grabbed one of the vegetables and started to cut it.
"See, this works better, don't you think so, too?"
I had no time to answer him, because just then he ended his question I sprung up from my chair and passed Duo. He was very surprised at my actions, but I think then he saw me running to the cooking-stove he understood. The rice was just boiling over. I saved our cooking-stove in the last second.
"Oh", he yelped and gave me a look as innocent as he could.
"Baka instead of trying to teach me cutting vegetables what I can do on my own, you should look after the rice", I grumbled mildly at Duo.
"Aa, you are right, Hee-chan."
He went to stand up, but I stopped him immediately with a smile.
"I think, because you said you know a better method for cutting the vegetables and I am standing here by the rice now, wouldn't it be the best to change the task?"
Duo made a little face, but then agreed. So now it was me who looked after the rice while he cut the vegetables. We did our work in silence, but neither of us could resist throwing some looks at each other. After a while Duo threw the knife on the table and grinned at me in triumph.
"I am finished, Hee-chan!"
I sighed.
"Can't you stop calling me that way? You know I don't like that nickname."
"Yepp, I know." Duo grinned sheepishly. "And that's why I love to use it on you. First it's always fun to tease you and second I think it suits perfect to you. As sweet as you are."
"Enough teasing for today", I mumbled while showing him the backside, because Duo made me blush for the second time of this day.
But I was really happy. He thought I was sweet. No one said this to me before. And to be true I didn't want to hear it from someone else than Duo.
I finished cooking the rice and instructed Duo to put everything in a frying-pan while I started to cook the sauce. When Duo finished his task he turned around and watched how I prepared the water.
"Give me the flour, butter and Asian sauce, please?" I asked him and pointed with my finger on the table where the said things were standing.
"Sure", answered Duo, reaching for the things and giving them to me with a smile. We cooked the sauce together now. Duo put the fixings in the pot like I instructed him while I myself stirred everything till it looked perfect in my opinion.
"Mmh, that smells really good. And it looks exact like the sauce in this restaurant. You are really good in cooking, Hee-chan."
Duo stood right beside me and rolled his eyes in extreme joy.
"If you had known the recipe for the sauce you would be as good as you think I am", I gave him the compliment back.
"Thanks Heero", he answered blushing. Then he started to fry the rice and vegetables. I went to the fridge and took meat out to cut it into little pieces. After I finished, I came back to Duo and put the meat pieces to the rice and the vegetables in the frying-pan. Duo looked satisfied after he fried it all ten minutes while I made sure that the sauce didn't boil over.
"OK Heero, you can pour the sauce in the frying-pan", Duo told me. "I think we are finished now."
I did as he told me and he smiled.
"Mind to prepare the table?" he asked. I denied with shaking my head and started the work. I called Duo then I finished.
"OK, here it comes!" was his immediate answer and he presented proudly the frying-pan with our dinner, the first one we cooked together. "Have a seat, Heero, I will do the rest."
I nodded and smiled at him. He began to put a rice portion on my plate. After me he filled his own. Then he seat down next to me.
"Enjoy your meal, Hee-chan!"
He smiled.
"I wish you the same, Duo!"
We began to eat in comfortable silence. But after a while Duo started to speak.
"Know what, Heero? I think we should cook together more often. I enjoyed it, really. And I think we were a good team."
I looked at him and saw myself confronted with his fork he held at me. Furthermore he sent me his sweetest smile.
"Duo?"
"C’mon, Heero, just take it!"
"Why do you want to feed me with your food?" I asked him confused. He rolled his eyes.
"C’mon, Heero, it's fun. And it could be romantic as well", he added quiet. I couldn't resist. It was a funny feeling. Normally I would never do such things. But with Duo everything we do is special. I found myself opening my mouth and accepting Duo's proposition. He looked happy then he put the fork in my opened mouth. After I swallowed what he gave me, I took my own fork and confronted him with the same proposition.
"Really sweet, Hee-chan", he murmured blushing and swallowed my food. Then I ate the next portion from Duo and then again I fed him. We ended the whole meal with feeding each other. Duo was right. It was not only fun. All the time I felt warm and loved. I could feel the happiness all over my body.
After we finished our dinner, Duo looked at me with a strange light in his eyes.
"Uhm, mind if I gave you a spontaneous dessert, Heero?"
"Dessert? What dessert? We haven't anything here to make a dessert", I asked him confused. He smiled.
"It's something sweet, Heero."
And he didn't lie. Then he pressed his lips against mine, he gave me a kiss which I only could describe with the word 'sweet'. I took him closer to my body and I swear I felt my body melt in his arms for the first time. And while we kissed I noted that I would never forget this first cooking together with Duo. I will not forget it, never in my life!
