Chapter 5: Wrong Numbers

Nick's eyes popped open as he heard the mellow ring of his cell phone go off. He grunted and turned over in his bunk. He struggled out of bed and scrambled around trying to find it. He hated that thing. Who could be calling him so early in the morning?

Finally he found it underneath a pile of computer magazines. "Hello?" He said, sleep still in his eyes and voice.

"Nick?" Sarah asked.

"Sarah! How'd you get my number?"

"I found it in A.j.'s phone book," she answered. "I'm sorry about calling you kind of early, but I haven't slept at all last night."

"Yeah…" Nick didn't really know what to say.

"I've been thinking, and well…I'm glad I'm a part of this with you now. You were serious, weren't you?"

"Let's not talk on the phone," Nick said.

"Why not?"

"Do it!" Nick said urgently. "Don't ask questions. I'll be in front of your place in ten minutes. Can you be ready?"

"I-"

"Be ready." Nick turned his cell phone off and got dressed.

Sarah was sitting on the curb next to the hotel room. Nick pulled his car up, and she hopped in.

They were quiet for a few moments. "Don't ever call my normal cell when we're talking about business," Nick said patiently. "They have that one screened. Remember this number." Nick said a series of numbers, and Sarah repeated them, and he said it over and over until she had it drilled into her brain.

"That number calls this phone," Nick pulled out a small black phone from out of his front pocket.

"I thought you didn't like carrying cell phones around with you," Sarah said matter-of-factly.

"I lied," he said simply. He pulled into a restaurant parking lot and parked. The sun was coming up over the horizon now, and they faced it. "I'm not sure you want to do this," he said.

"Why?" Sarah asked.

"Because I'm not sure if even I want to keep on doing this," he faced her. "I just found out last night my partner passed away."

Sarah muttered something softly to herself.

"I don't think you wanna end up like her, and quite frankly neither do I."

"I'm not afraid," Sarah said indignantly.

Nick laughed a little. "You will be," he promised. "You will be."

"Well I'm doing this, without you or not."

Nick sighed and smiled. "Ok. We'll start once the tour is over."

"Yes, we will," Sarah said aggressively.
