Background on Holly:

Series 14:

Holly Miles first made her appearance on Casualty in 1999 at the beginning of series 14. She was a stand in SHO after they were short staffed. Holly was down from Paediatrics where she was currently working. She was always popular with all her staff. Half way through series 14, Dr Patrick Spiller started as the new Senior Registrar. It was obvious the two of them knew each other and she seemed angry with him. We later find out they were together at med school for a few months, but Holly dumped him.

The first big incident she had was when she got too involved with a young girl called Gemma Foster, who happened to be her next door neightbour. It ended in a big between Holly and Gemma's mum Joanne, who didn't want her getting involved. As a result, Holly and Gemma were knocked down by an oncoming car. Joanne panicked and ran off with Jake and Zoe, her two other younger children. When the paramedics arrived, Holly refused to wear a neck collar which she later got in trouble for from Max. The social services had to be called for Gemma. Joanne came to get Gemma and Holly, knowing she'd done the wrong thing, helped her sneek past the police to see her daughter. Unfortunately, the police saw her go in and there was a big scene in reception as she was arrested. Holly tried reasoning with the police, but it was no good and they were all in tears as Joanne was taken away.

Realising she shouldn't have handled the situation the way she did, Holly goes into the staff room, thinking about what she's done to the family. Barney comes in, telling her she did what she thought was right, but leaves seeing he's not succeding in cheering her up.Patrick comes in, and looks at the cut on her left cheek she got from the road accident. He comforst her, telling her that it wasn't her fault.Read the script

Series 15:

In series 15, Holly becomes increasingly agiated about the bed shortages in the first episode. Dan, the hospital manager, is asked to do an interview with a local reporter for a newspaper on the current state of the NHS at a restaurant. Not really in the mood to doing it, he passes it onto Max, who passes it on to Holly. Patrick becomes a bit grumpy about it, and Holly can see that he's jealous. She goes on the interview, saying how brave one nurse was for working knowing he was HIV positive. The reporter is very interested, and she tries to say the patients would never be put in any risk. The reporter leaves and she realises that won't be the end of it.

After the reasons with him, he promises not to write about Adam, but it just so happens that another man, who has financial problems, has overheard the conversation. He rings up the local paper and suddenly, it's all around town. Holly admits to Adam it was her, and he walks out. After putting up with it, Adam evetually leaves Holby.

A favourie episode for many Holly and Patrick fans was "Merry Christmas Dr Spiller" on 23rd December 2000. Patrick drives Holly to a Christmas Lunch with some of her old collegues. On the way back, his car breaks down in the snow. Trying to open the frozen boot, Patrick injures his thumb and twists his ankle after falling over a branch. Holly says she's spotted a barn and they could take shelter there. In the barn, Patrick gets some whisky out and they both have a couple of sips. Both cold,Patrick says they should sit closer together and despite her first reaction, trying to avoid the subject, she eventually gives in and huddles up to him with his arms around her. Holly asks why he has to be so grumpy on Christmas. He tells her that his mum died on Christmas day when he was ten. Both of them have tears in their eyes as he tells her the story. She places her hand on his face, and tells him she's glad he told her. Later, he tells her he thinks she's lonely, even thoght she denies it. He tries to kiss her, but she turned away and said she was going to check on the weather. She comes back after finally getting a signal on her phone and calling for an ambulance. Thinking he's not breathing, she panicks and shakes him, he stirs slightly and she breathes a sigh of relief. Holly bends down and kisses him on the cheek and says "Merry Christmas Dr Spiller". The most disturbing of Holly's storylines, was the stalker one. It started at new year, when she got a card saying "Have a great new year. Wish I was spending it with you" She confronted Patrick, asking if it was his idea of a joke. He said it wasn't him, and she was left puzzled. The next gift was quite a while later, a big bunch of flowers, which she eventually gave to Chloe because they made her sneeze. Then, she got a small book of Shakespear Sonnets. The presents kept coming - more flowers, teddy bears. She was getting sick of it and suspected that the stalker had been in her house and car. Patrick told her to go to the police, but she said she'd probably just blown it all out of proportion. The last straw was when she got a phonecall from him. She went to work, all shaken up. Patrick gave her a lift home asking if she wanted him to go in with her. She said he should get home and she had a lot of housework to do. When she got home, the washing had been done, the dishes and been cleaned. She went in the bathroom and saw many burning candles afloat in her bath. The telephone rang and knowing how it would be, she sunk to the floor, crying with her hands over her ears.
The next day, she tells Patrick and he says afer the shift, he's going to take her home and stay while she talks to the police. Then, as he is about to take her back, he finds that someone's slashed his tyres and has to call out a mechanic. Dan suggests that Tom should take her home, which he agrees to.
