Her father used to have an affair with a woman called Hannah Marshall, and through this brief but hectic love affair, a child came forth...a boy called Justin. Justin is 2 years older than Ruby.
Hannah Marshall broke all contact with the McLaughlan family as soon as Ruby was born. Some say this is, because she lost all hope of her ex-lover coming back to her. No wonder Hannah detested Ruby...
Justin however was quite curious to the little girl with her red hair, who some said was his baby sister. The little boy had a reason to visit the McLaughlan family and though his mother wasn't too pleased with this, at least he got to meet and know his father as well...
Ruby was basically raised by her older brother. Her father was always too busy with his bussiness (and his secretary) and her mother was too wrapped up with herself. Ruby found her regularly with empty bottles of Scotch around her in the living room...
But always she fled into the safe arms of her brother who advised her and kept her safe from all harm.
When she reached the age of 12 she realised she had a nice voice, according to her brother it was even beautiful. Ruby trained herself and on her 16th birthday she announced to her parents she would leave school to sing in a local nightclub.
Benjamin and Yvette were upset and blamed Justin, believing he is a bad influence on Ruby. A big fight began and Ruby left the house angrily with Justin following her. At a quiet place he gave her a special birthday gift. A crystal on a necklace...Ruby wore it for years, believing it would protect her.
Though her parents tried to convince her otherwise, Ruby left school and began a "career" as a nightclub singer. A lust object for older men. Therefor she lost her virginity quite fast, learning men are easy tools to gain power. Her brother worried about her impulsive lovelife, but knew he couldn't change his sister's wild and free heart.
Ruby was 17 when Justin brought a friend with him to one of her weekly gigs. Justin introduced him to her as Tristan Dannon. The handsome man fell madly in love with the young redhead and Ruby let her wild heart speak again. The two were engaged shortly after they met. Justin seemed worried...
Though she tried several times to love Tristan sincerely, she still slept around with other men and hurted her fiancée over and over again. One night the bubble burst, when Ruby told her lover that she would leave him to go to New York, so she could seek fame and fortune.
Tristan begged her not to go, for he couldn't follow as he had bussiness to attend together with her brother. Ruby was too stubborn and young to change her mind. She left him a week later, fully packed. She only left him a note and a broken heart...
In New York she soon discovered that all was different...not only the city itself, but the people who live in it as well...Passing by a woman, she was soon grabbed and threatened. Ruby felt an odd sensation flow through her, but couldn't place why and didn't know what it meant...Her whole first night was strange to her. People weren't friendly and they seemed to shy away as soon as she approached someone.
She did meet a young woman named Lily, who became her friend quite soon after that, then Ruby discovered why she felt the odd sensation...she discovered Lily wasn't mortal. Not a simple human soul, like she was herself...and soon she met more creatures of the night like her.
She received a phonecall from London when she was having lunch with Lily one night...her brother rather upset and angry. he informed her that Tristan had committed suicide and left a note, saying he couldn't live without his love... Ruby was shocked and lives with a terrible guiltfeeling after that dreadful phonecall...
Lily dissapeared quite sudden out of her life to Defex City, hearing rumours here and there, but never seeing her around anymore.
She met a man called Trevor Kachina, a Garou who was friendly to her. When he bought her dinner, she saw another man sitting in the cafe. A man who was the spitting image of her diceased fiancée Tristan. Ruby was shocked and confused and felt she needed to leave New York.
Lost and lonely she went to Vancouver where she got shelter from a vampire named Scar. There she found Trevor Kachina had followed her. She apparently struck his fancy and he wanted to keep her safe...after she found the Loft had been destroyed she moved back to New York together with Trevor.
On a certain night, where they had to run from the police, after a daemon friend of theirs had caused commotion in the park, they kissed. Ruby thought she was in love with the handsome, dark Garou and stayed with him.
They were happy for about 2 months, but then a Black Spiral Dancer entered Ruby's apartment...the Dancer wanted to get Trevor to join them. As a proud Wendigo he obviously refused. A fight started and Ruby was locked up in her bedroom by Trevor to keep her safe. She heard a lot of growling and crashing, then her lover stormed in, picked her up and jumped through the window with her in his arms...When the lovers landed in a safe distance she heard a loud noise and turned to see her apartment being blown away...
She moved in with Trevor, in the apartment above his dojo, but the love affair started to show cracks and wounds. The man in the cafe that looked so much like Tristan wouldn't leave her mind and Ruby was determined to find him and have her questions answered...Trevor left more and more often for several quests and one of those quests caused him to stay away for a month...
During that time, Ruby met a man who introduced himself as Pale. Amused by his charming behaviour, he was etched in her mind. The same evening she saw Pale again in her favourite café Bernie's... though this time he had company. A blonde good-looking woman named Leah and a man...the man that is Tristan's look-a-like. This man finally introduced himself to Ruby as Ashton Thorne. Ruby feels that she is falling for him, but she wonders if she is falling for this man, who turns out to be a vampire, or if she is falling for the memory she has of Tristan. She becomes friends with all three of them though and is happy she isn't alone anymore in this big city now that Trevor has left for a while...
In the early morning, it is still dark, she meets Pale in the park. This time he tells her his real name, it is Andreus. The moment Ruby senses something is wrong, she touches him and finds through her ability that he is a newborn vampire. Ruby is shocked, but offers him a place to come to when he is down and needs a friend...
Ruby also becomes friends with Leah and the blonde woman offers Ruby a job. Ruby will do some of the paperwork, as Leah works for the billionaire Adam Trent, also known as Azazel, the Archangel of Power.
Trevor comes back for a little while, but has to leave again the day after. Ruby and him have a fight, since she has tried to write the dojo on her own name, so she can make money out of it. They get disturbed when someone knocks on the door. It is Andreus who gives her the papers of the dojo, she had left with a friend...a waitress of her favourite café. She immediately senses Andreus had been feeding on her and throws him against the wall with rage, threatening him with her dagger, the one she keeps on her hip to protect herself...she wounds him and Andreus leaves, leaving her frustrated and full of anger
Trevor leaves again for a long period of time and Ruby makes it a sort of hobby to try and torment Andreus, wanting to hurt him, perhaps even kill him...She bothers him again as she sees him walking on the streets with two women, one of them a mortal who is his girlfriend. The mortal woman, named Loreligh slaps Ruby and it makes her see how wrong she is. Knowing Andreus had no choice and it was an unfortunate situation...
She goes through a phase of feeling miserable, going back to hitting on men and sleeping with them. This is when she gets interested in the darker side of the nightlife, she plucks up all the courage she has and asks Andreus to tell her more about becoming a vampire...Andreus is fairly surprised and tells her to think about it hard.
A time of more confusion arrives, when she gets a phonecall and hears breathing on the other side of the line...then the person hangs up without answering...a few moments later her brother appears out of nowhere and Ruby doesn't understand. He explains that he has been giving a job to kill someone and that someone turned out to be a vampire. He needs a place to stay and the only one he would feel safe with was his sister, that's why he left for New York. Ruby offers him shelter, but also informs him she will move soon, that she has decided to leave Trevor. Leah had offered her an apartment and Ruby took the offer...
One evening she sits at Bernie's with another vampire friend called Nikika and sees Ashton and Leah enter, Ruby witnesses Ashton's confession to Leah that he loves her. Ruby feels heartbroken and leaves for the bathroom, when she returns she sees that a vampire named Sabra and a daemon named Priest are arguing with Leah and Ashton. Ruby leaves the cafe, knowing Sabra might hurt her and knowing she isn't able to help.
She finds Andreus' love Loreligh on the street and walks her home, Andreus on his turn offers to walk along with Ruby for a while...Ruby knows that he must feed. In the elevator Andreus offers her the embrace, but Ruby refuses, she feels too scared, too uncertain and confused...
She wanders the streets night after night and a young blonde man, about her own age asks her if she's alright. She treats him rudely in the beginning, but the man offers her warmth and asks if she wants to go for a drink...Ruby walks along with him. At Bernie's she learns his name is Joseph Halfyard and that he is a mage. He explains that it is something like the people in the film "The Matrix"... Ruby is interested in this handsome man, but tries not to show too much. When asked for a hotel, Ruby offers him to stay at her new apartment, for she still stays at the old one and will move only next week. Joseph accepts the offer, only if his cat can come too. Ruby agrees and shows him the apartment. She never leaves that night and awakens in Joseph's arms.
Feeling odd she returns to her old apartment where she used to live with Trevor she starts packing her stuff, then Trevor enters again. She notices a change in him and realises he has turned to be part of the Black Spiral Dancers. Trevor is about to rape Ruby, but lets her go instead and kicks her out...she leaves, again full of guilt, feeling Trevor has changed because she had hurt him.
Joseph hasn't left and Ruby explains what happened, Joseph gets furious, but Ruby manages to calm him down by getting rude herself. That is when Joseph decides he shouldn't stick around with her. He leaves the cat with her though, which means he will return to pick the little feline up
Joseph is gone for a few days when she meets Sabra at Bernie's and hears she holds Ashton Thorne as her personal "slave", Ruby gets furious and tells Sabra she won't get away with it. Then she realises she is being watched by no one else than Joseph Halfyard. he walks her home and she tells him she wants him to stay. The two become lovers and Ruby realises that she has fallen in love for the first time of her life. feeling she never wants to leave this man.
Joseph asks her who the woman in the café was she shouted at and Ruby explains it is Sabra, someone who wants to hurt her friend Leah and wants to hurt Ashton. Therefor she is Ruby's enemy as well. Ruby explains how Sabra threatened to embrace Ruby, just now she decided she does not want to. Her lover listens to her story and suggests that she could be awakened...meaning she could become a Mage. Like Andreus did once when she asked about ambracing, Joseph advices her to think about it and gives her some time. After a few days Ruby tells him she will take his offer.
Joseph makes sure the ritual can be performed and helps Ruby to awaken. He learns her the basic things, but as she has chosen a different tradition than he did, she has to find a teacher who can teach the specialities of her choice; the Dreamspeakers...
At the time being Ruby studies hard and is keen to learn, but still knows she has a long way to go. She is also afraid that Trevor might make training difficult, fearing he could appear any second...
However, weeks pass by without Trevor making an entrance in her life again, instead she meets someone else...
While she has a walk through the streets of New York City, she hears a voice cry for help, her senses alerting her for a vampire...Ruby makes her way to where the sound comes from and finds an old acquaintance called Laura Finmore, threatening a young boy. Though Ruby fears the woman will feed on the boy, Laura's voice crashes through her mind, saying she just wants to teach the boy a lesson for being a rude brat. Laura suddenly lets the boy go and dissapears in the night...
Ruby doesn't hesitate and rushes to the boy, helping him up and asking if he's okay. At that moment Joseph appears as well as Andreus. However, Andreus just appeared to check on the kid and leaves again as Ruby and Joe take the boy home with them.
The boy tells them his name is Ben McArthur and that he ran away from his schoolgroup. That he is from Stoke, on a trip to New York City with school. Ben asks Ruby more about the "creature" that attacked him and she tells him more about what lives in this world, yet stays quiet about what she and Joe are...
Ben stays with Joe and Ruby and Ruby develops special feelings for the boy, almost a bit motherly. The protective side in her takes over, with it she sometimes scares Ben...
Joseph tells Ruby he thinks the boy has a crush on her, but Ruby denies it. Joe just stays quiet, smiling...
On a quiet night, Ruby feels the presense of Andreus, talking to his mind. The young vampire appears from an alley and attacks her, clearly wanting to feed from her. Ruby is scared, but Andreus lets her go for some reason, leaving the young woman confused and scared...
All seems to go a bit better, until Ruby meets an angelic on the streets called Raven. Without a word the handsome man kisses her on the lips and Ruby is surprised, but annoyed as well. Though the introduction is somewhat hostile, they finally go for a cup of coffee together.
Ruby is so charmed by his admiration for her beauty she kisses him in return, but feeling guilty immediately as her thoughts dwell of Joseph.
When she leaves the café she finds Joe on the streets, clearly wounded. She rushes to him, forgetting about what happened with Raven and speeds home with him. Joseph gets better with his own magic and explains her it was a Garou that attacked him...someone unknown...not Trevor...
After a bit of hesitating Ruby confesses to him that she kissed another man, but that nothing else happened and that she loves Joseph...no one else but Joseph...
The blonde man is so upset he just heads for the bedroom, after looking straight into Ruby's eyes for a moment. The emotional pain clearly visible on his features...
Despite an attempt of Ruby to make him stay, Joseph dissapears, leaving the young woman in her apartment. His black cat there again to keep her company. Ruby is shocked, filled with pain and guilt...not knowing if she will ever get her true beloved back...
Joseph apparently feels the same way as Ruby, as he returns a few days later, holding his lover in a warm embrace, though he still seems more distant than usual, caused by the attack from the 2 Garou...
Ruby is happy when she gets a call from her friend Leah again, telling her she has returned from a bussiness trip. When she meets her in a café she realises Andreus is there as well, talking to Leah. Ruby immediately takes a hostile attitude to him, causing an incredible tension between Leah, Andreus, his friend and her...
When Andreus leaves, Leah asks Ruby to give him a chance...
While Joseph contemplates who his attackers are and why they attacked him, Ruby gets offered a new job at Trent Industries. The bussiness of the famous Adam Trent, also a personal friend of Ruby and her friend Leah. Adam will leave TI to Leah and Ruby gets promoted to vice-president. Of course Ruby is thrilled and tells Joseph. He is also pleased, but his mind seems to be set on completely something different...
Ruby enjoys a night with Joseph at home and when he leaves, Andreus appears in her apartment. The woman is on the edge of beating Andreus out of her apartment, until he tells her he came to talk. He explains he attacked her, because he was close to Torpor, yet when he could have fed from her, there was something that held him back. Something he couldn't explain. Ruby wants to believe him and somewhere she does, yet she knows from now on she will never trust Andreus fully...
When Ruby finds out through Sac that she has been attacked by a Garou like creature and two other Garou, Ruby gets worried. Sac tells her that she followed Joseph and that she saw he was attacked by two Garou...the same Garou who attacked him before. When he was able to get away they went for Sac. Ruby is furious, scared that one day she will lose Joseph again. When he returns home, the lovers argue and Ruby says some very hurtful things. Joe's attitude towards Ruby changed quite immediately and Ruby feels scared she has crossed the line again, this time by loving him so much she "cramps his style"...
Ruby apologises and Joseph accepts, still he seems cold and emotionless to her.
Ruby notices she has to make even more changes within herself if she doesn't want to fail again...
Fortunately the lovers are so bonded they find a way to make up again and realise even more that their love is unstopable. They could not be parted, not even by death.
When Ruby's friend Sac is hit by Paradox and she thinks she's a cowgirl from the wild west, Ruby meets her on the streets riding a horse. Ben takes a ride with Sac, but just when Ruby is about to ask where sac got the horse, she hears sirens and gunshots, learning quickly the police is chasing Sac for she has stolen the horse.
Sac gets arrested and Ben and Ruby as well, since they have been seen with the suspect. As soon as Andreus hears of this he tries to help his friends by creating a thick shadow through the street, not allowing the mortals to see.
Andreus gets attacked though by a Kuei-Jin called Huang and as soon as Ruby tries to escape with Ben, they also get beat up. Huang leaves them behind severely wounded.
The two are healed by an angelic friend of Sac, named Jade and Ruby's lover whisks Ben and Ruby away, safely to home.
Ruby seems to deal with the whole ordeal just fine and carries on with her normal life. When she has a stroll about in the park she hears a familiar voice calling out to her, soon learning Ashton Thorne has returned. The two friends hug and start talking soon. Ashton tells her he is still in danger and Ruby tells him how Leah is and that Ruby finally met the man of her life. When she tells him she would love to marry Joseph, Ashton tells her to follow her heart and ask him.
The young redhead returns home nervously, but after a little chat she blurts out she wants to marry him, in Paris, while she's on her bussiness trip. Joseph is fairly surprised, but after she asked him seriously he is filled with joy and accepts the proposal.
Ruby's friend and boss Leah postpones the board meeting (therefor the bussiness trip to Paris as well) and Ruby soon learns this has something to do with the change of Adam Trent (a.k.a Azazel), who now has become a warrior angel. Leah refuses Adam and he now relies on Ruby to keep an eye on Leah and help her as much as she can. Though Adam is also harsh to her, Ruby still cares for her protector and does as he says. Knowing this will be hard with a headstrong woman as her friend Leah.
Ruby leaves shortly for Paris anyway to marry her Joe. The happy couple returns to New York City quite soon, after they also attended their friend Sac's wedding, and soon find out their whole lives are turned upside down.

The bussiness where Ruby works has changed names and is now called Dangerous Designs, Incorporate. This is however not the most important change.
When she and Joe spend some quality time together, Joseph loses himself in the heat of passion and his darker side takes over. Confused and shocked, Joseph lets Ruby go and whispers he needs his coat over and over again. As soon as Ruby gives him his long leather coat, her husband calms down and starts apologising. Ruby listens carefully to his story and learns there's still much to find out about her beloved. He explains that there is a seed of the purest black in his chest. He had tried to remove it before, but a tendril must have stayed there and is now taking him over. Ruby is shocked, but promises her husband that they'll find a way. Joseph tells her as long as he has his coat he's able to keep it down. The coat protects him against it...
When Ruby has a stroll and meets Andreus as well as Sac on the streets, she hears screams for help and gunshots from an apartment. Andreus had to leave quite sudden, but Ruby and Sac go to check it out. When Ruby knocks she hears no answer, then decides to shoot at the lock with her newly bought gun. Ruby cannot even remember of much that happened, only that she realises suddenly she is shot in her side herself and sinks down to the ground. The wedding ring on her finger glows for a moment and Joseph soon appears on her side. His anger taking him over and the darkness in him coming to the surface. He and the man who shot Ruby start to fight and when Ruby is able to open her eyes for a small moment she recognises the man as Huang, the Kuei-Jin. The one who attacked her and Ben before. Ruby herself has developed something odd, which happened first when Joseph showed his dark side for the first time as well. She starts whispering in a strange, unknown language. Something long forgotten, though Joseph does feel there's something familiar to it, yet not placing it...
Huang shoots Joseph and then dissapears, but fortunately Joe can dodge the shots, by using his coat, then heals Ruby. Taking her home with him, Sac following them.
The strange language seems to have a reason why it comes up more and more, for when Ruby and Joseph have a fight about him wanting to chase Huang, he leaves, leaving Ruby behind frustrated, which is when the strange language comes up. Her brother Justin finds her on the streets, whispering these words, as soon as he tries to make her "snap out of it", her exlover Trevor walks by. Intrigued by all of this he moves to get a closer look, though as soon as Ruby sees him, both seem to be sucked up in a world only known to them. Trevor speaks in the strange language as well, though Ruby can understand him, hearing his pleas for her to leave soon for she is in danger. He also calls her "Your Highness"... Justin doesn't understand much of it yet, but soon he is sucked up in this trance as well, not saying much, but certainly part of this...
As soon as the visions are gone, the three can't remember a thing. Ruby and Trevor start to fight and when he pushes her on the streets she gets hit by a bus. Justin fails in defending his sister and ends up with a broken nose. He drags his wounded sister inside her apartment, still not remembering what has happened earlier. Ruby, however, seems to grasp it piece by piece...
Joseph learns about this pretty soon and he is also able to make out what she's saying in her dreams, which explains he's part of it as well...Though after a few quiet days, they leave it behind, waiting for the right time to get to the bottom of this...
When Ruby has a bite to eat at her favourite café Bernie's she gets to know an angelic called Zacharael and also meets her old friend Mikael again. Though she feels quite alright for a while, she suddenly recognises one of the other guests in the café as Huang, the Kuei-Jin... Ruby decides it's best that she leaves, especially when she sees Adam outside, motioning her to come out. Though as soon as she reaches for the door, which appears to be suddenly locked, Huang opens fire on her. She couldn't be harmed, Adam made sure of that. As soon as he takes her to a safer place, she sees his true celestial form. His anger towards her for getting herself in trouble makes her even more scared of him...The other angelic Zacharael takes Ruby and the wounded Mikael home...
Ruby does not get much rest though, because Adam visits her soon to shout at her. When Leah arrives as well, he seems to calm down and starts cooking dinner for Leah, Ruby, himself and Zacharael, who he invited...
They get disturbed by knocking on the door soon. It appears to be one of the men Huang kept company at Bernie's called Lateralis. Adam tells Ruby she shouldn't invite him in, though Leah seems to be a friend of this man. Ruby refuses to let Lateralis in and shortly after he leaves, Leah leaves as well...
Leaving behind two confused angelics and one mixed up mystic...
As Adam leaves the apartment, he seems to be much warmer to Ruby now and when Ruby begs him for help for her husband with the tendril, he promises he knows someone... Ruby discusses this with Joseph and when he tries to refuse they get into another fight. Ruby blurts out she wants a normal father for her son and with that Joseph is so shocked he drops a plate, staring at his wife. Then happiness seems to take over and Ruby also realises what she just said. When Joe lays his hands on her belly he indeed feels the fragile life inside of her...now he promises her he will give the cleansing a try...
The angel Nathen indeed comes to cleanse Joseph, but even though both of them try hard, the tendril won't break down completely. Ruby is scared, but Joseph assures her he will find a way. For now, the tendril won't take him over for some time...
When Ruby thinks there are some quiet times, Adam appears in her apartment, telling her Lateralis tries to set him up. After hearing the whole story, Ruby receives a phonecall from a certain agent of the FBI, who wants to question her about her friendship with Adam Trent. The agent informs her he will be there shortly and that he needs to talk to her...Not trusting this one bit, she lets Adam know by speaking obvious enough in the phone and looking to Adam. After thinking a bit and hearing to Ruby's frantic words, he tells her to pack her things. Ruby suggests going to her friends in Willow Ridge. Adam tells her to calm down and listen to him. All he wants her to do is write a note to Joe and hold his hand. She does as he says and soon she finds herself in an unknown building. There Adam asks a woman to protect Ruby. Ruby hears with horror how she will be locked up on one certain floor and also feels insulted when the woman says something about the child she carries. After 3 months of pregnancy Ruby is rather emotional, but Adam forces her to calm down by giving her a look...She soon realises she has no choice, but to go with this and the knowledge of Ben and Joseph soon being brought to her comforts her...Right now the red mystic waits impatiently for her family, while wondering if she'll ever be able to return to New York City...
