Restoring The
"File Open" Function

(With Windows 98 SE)

If you install & uninstall a program you may lose the ability to OPEN files.
The file type -(JPG-GIF-BMP-TXT-whatever)- may become associated with the program you removed & since the program is no longer there the file type most likely cannot be opened.
To fix this problem follow the instructions below.
I use Internet Explorer to open my computer image files just like visiting an image file on a website.

  1. How to change the file association on .DOC/.XLS/Graphic files.
  2. To change the association follow these steps:
  3. Find a file of the file type you want to change association on.
  4. Left click the file ONE TIME so it highlights.
  5. Hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard.
  6. Click the file with the RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON.
  7. Now select "Open With"
  8. Select the application you want to open this file type with from now on.
  9. Check the box "Always use this program to open this type of file".
  10. Leave the box unchecked to open the file once using the selected program.
  11. Click OK.

(With Windows XP Pro)

Right click on a file.
(I'm using an image file as an example.)

Left click on "Open With".

Left click on "Choose Program".
