(With Windows 98 SE)If you install & uninstall a program you may lose the ability to OPEN files.
The file type -(JPG-GIF-BMP-TXT-whatever)- may become associated with the program you removed & since the program is no longer there the file type most likely cannot be opened.
To fix this problem follow the instructions below.
I use Internet Explorer to open my computer image files just like visiting an image file on a website.
- How to change the file association on .DOC/.XLS/Graphic files.
- To change the association follow these steps:
- Find a file of the file type you want to change association on.
- Left click the file ONE TIME so it highlights.
- Hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard.
- Click the file with the RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON.
- Now select "Open With"
- Select the application you want to open this file type with from now on.
- Check the box "Always use this program to open this type of file".
- Leave the box unchecked to open the file once using the selected program.
- Click OK.
(With Windows XP Pro)
Right click on a file.
(I'm using an image file as an example.)Left click on "Open With".
Left click on "Choose Program".
I use Internet Explorer for image files.
Windows Paint will open .bmp files.
