I am a dedicated Dreamcast fan and I am glad to express my opion on this subject. So enough with the delay and let's get to a topic that I as well as I know many of you have been stressing for a while.

Dreamcast will no longer be supported after 3/31/02. Sega will now become a company solely dedicated to producing games for it's former competition. So you will see characters that made SEGA famous, such as Sonic and Ulala, on systems such as Ninendo's Gamecube and Microsoft's X-Box. That announcement in itself was almost as big as the WWF taking over WCW. To be honest, I (like many of you) was not pleased with that decision. I was downright angry. Sega made great games for a great systems. They had an excellent online strategy, and many games looked even better on it than it did on even Sony's Playstation 2. Even after killer games and what seemed like a bright future, Sega still turned it's back on it's Dreamcast System. I have several theories on why the Dreamcast didn't become a Playstation killer.

One theory that I have is Sega's advertising strategy. In it's early history, they had 3D commercials and all the characters that Sega had thrown in each and every commercial. That marketing strategy I believe DID catch people's attention AT FIRST, but they should have dropped that strategy after a while. Even McDonald's can think of a new marketing strategy after a while. Since the commercials failed to reach the right audience, by the time they did change the commercial's style, it was too late. One suggestion I could've given them is to go back to old school. When Sega used to stare it's competition in the face and laugh at them and talk dirt, that's when Sega caught their attention.

Another theory is that an incredible amount of people were BEGGING Sega to bring back some classic hits like Panzer Dragoon, Streets of Rage, and especially Nights. Sega's response to that was always the same. They told the public that they want to concentrate on new stuff and not the old. That's all fine and dandy, but all you guys had to do was listen to the public. You wanna sell games, sell games that people beg you for. If that means bringing back the classics, DO IT! You know we wanna buy it, so why didn't you want to make it?

Sega also needed the support of more third party developers. That would've also helped. If they would have signed with the likes of Squaresoft and EA, who knows where they would be. Probably better off then they are now. It's not to say that Sega didn't produce kick-ass games. It's just that not enough people who don't know ANYTHING about games, knew about them. Playstation 2 succeeded because Sony was able to get the "know nothing wanna be gamer" to say, "Hey, did you hear about the new Playstation 2?! The graphics are supposed to be amazing!"

Let Dreamcast Addicts know what you think about this subject.

Till next time readers.
