SUCCESSES

Whilst Mowbray had considerable success in the North, and have been always been considered the team that had to be beaten to win a pennant and its players always in contention for championships, it was not until the seventies that success on a State level came the Club’s way. Mike Leedham became Mowbray’s first State Amateur Champion in 1974, with Garry Harper winning that title in 1977. Mike was again successful in 2002 defeating John Cassidy over 36 holes in a unique all Mowbray final.

1976 saw Mowbray win its first Claremont Shield (The Tasmanian Club Championship) and again in 1977 with subsequent victories in 1986, 1994, 1998, 1999 and 2001 - The most successful record of any Tasmanian Club.

1977 was a great year for pennant as Mowbray completed in all three Division State finals, winning its first ever First Division Flag. The same situation occurred again in 1978 with Third Division winning the State Flag for the second time, the first time being in 1973 when both Second and Third Division State Flags were won. Second Division had started the run by winning the Club’s first State Flag in 1971 after competing in the 1970 finals, and First Division finished the seventies by winning its second State Flag in 1979 and the inaugural L.R. Wastell Trophy for that win.

Members  who have represented the State in the Interstate Team matches include Bruce McClure 1966, 1967; Mike Leedham 1974 to 1994; Colin Stott 1977; Garry Harper 1980; Robin Hodgetts 1998, 2001; John Cassidy 2000, 2001. Mike Leedham and Elliott Booth (Claremont) won the Australian Foursomes Championship in 1979 and also in that year Garry Harper and Louise Carrick won the Tasmanian Mixed Foursomes Championship, although it was E.R. Bishop and Mrs. E.J. Dowling who won Mowbray’s first State title at  this event in 1952; with John and Mrs. Helen Smith again winning in 1955. 1983 saw Robbie Carrick and Phillip Waller  win the Tasmanian Foursomes Championship.

Mowbray has, for many years, followed a policy of encouraging junior members, a policy which undoubtedly contributed to the emergence of Mowbray golfing succuss commencing in the seventies. The success of these juniors on the Northern scene have been too numerous to mention here, however at the State level, success started in 1961 when Lloyd French entered the State Junior Team, a position he retained for five years, the last two as Captain. Other State Junior Team members have been Shane Knott, Keith Lamb, 1967 Miss Shelly Westlake; 1968 Rodney Eiszele; 1979 and 1980 Louise Carrick and her brother, Robert Carrick gave unique brother, sister representation in 1980 and went on to perhaps emulate Lloyd French by gaining representation again in 1981, 1982 and captained the side in 1983.
