Before her Awakening, Clara was simply lovely. Now, reduced to indigent status and without a home of her own, she is very much like the flower girl or servant that she once longed to be: her normally glistening black hair is dull and hidden beneath a frayed handkerchief; once gay ocean eyes now stare out, forlorn and yet somehow pleased; her slim frame is tall and fair, but it is a far cry from her former stately and statuesque carriage. Those that see her on the street would perceive a darling, if tragic young lady, seeming not nearly as old as she is and yet much wizened by time sleeping in doorways and bus stations. Once a week, if she’s lucky, Clara can afford to spend a night in some motel and wash, in which case she is startlingly beautiful in a way that seems irregular for her clothing.
