Part One:  Data Collection

This will certainly be the biggest part of the Neo-FSURP, and the most interactive.  We want you, all of you, to help with this part.  Now, let me be clear that there will Community input for the whole Project, but only in this part will you, the members of the Community, have direct influence on the it.

The first thing I’ve done is establish a limit to what we can talk about.  By forcing these limits on the Project, we will reduce excessive speculation, and hopefully regulate what’s left to Part Three.  First, we have restricted the time period to the time between the discover of subspace to the destruction of Capella.  Nothing before, nothing after.  Second, only official Volition information will be used.  No user made campaigns, no fan based fiction, and certainly no wild speculation.

The second restriction means we can only use a handful of sources, but they are big sources.  We want information from the four official Freespace campaigns (The Great War, Silent Threat, Operation Templar, and FS2), all cutscenes (I know, I’ll talk about it in a minute), Tech room data, the Freespace Universal Reference Bible (Volition produced), and anything said by any member of the Freespace development team.  Beyond that, nothing else.

Now, you’ve probably already noted that some of that information, for one reason or another, may not be correct (the cutscenes are notorious for this).  We are not worried about that at this stage.  In Part Two, we will separate the good data from the bad, and possibly even establish a Freespace Myth section to the Encyclopedia.  For right now, we want it all.  However, if the data is in debate (the Freespace 2 intro for example), then we will need proof, especially when we move on the Part Two.

What are we looking for, you might ask.  Well, everything.  Let me be a tad more specific.  We want facts, flat out.  Anyone can read the Tech Room, but what are the facts buried under that text?  For example, did you know that the Orion was the largest ship in the GTVA for nearly 30 years?  It’s in the Tech Room for FS2.  That’s the kind of things we want. Here’s a general (and certainly not definitive) list of other things:

  • Facts from Campaign/Mission Briefings/Debriefings.  (Did you know that the Bastion had only recently been decommissioned when FS2 starts?)
  • Ship names, classes and locations during each mission/briefings.
  • Names of people (rare in Freespace, so it should be a short list) and what they did.
  • Background images (numbers of stars, number and types of planets, don’t worry about background nebula).
  • Tech Room facts (see my example above).
  • Dates, times, locations (very, very important).
  • Cutscene information (in all their inaccuracy).

Well, you get the idea now I’m sure.  The best way to get a lot of this information is to simply play Freespace with a note pad on hand.  I suppose you could also use the FRED to do it, but where’s the fun in that?

To submit your list, write it in a text file (*.TXT prefered), put your name at the top and send it to us.  We will post your list, untouched, in the master database that everyone will have access to.  When we have determined that we have enough information, we’ll move on to Part Two.  However, Part One will never truly be finished, and even as we start Part Two, we’ll still be accepting submissions.
