Based upon/from: David Weber's Honor Harrington series, specifically the treecats.
Background: Arrived upon the Tavern's world by secretly slipping about a Manticoran science ship heading there, he's to scout it for possible colonization by the People. So far, much of it seems perfect for such a colony, though things are a bit different than expected. The fact the planet's a nexus of realities is somewhat perplexing, though any cat's curiousity would find it very intriguing. The Tavern even more so.
