"I Stood Too Close"

C.J. Ingerson
2/24/99

Verse 1
********

The fire was warm
and beckoned me closer
thus I went inches at a time
till I was too close
being singed
only not knowing why.

Verse 2
********

Each day I pray to know
from the spirit to grow
to plant new seeds
to harvest in the Fall
but I go to the field
and notice no change
for everyday it looks the same
it is still only in the Spring.

Verse 3
********

When a friend is in need
I want so much to help
just rushing in to the middle
forgetting the fences to jump
stumbling and bleeding
dazed I struggle to understand
but I'm too close now
to know what it is
I'm suppose to do
or what need
my friend has of me.

Verse 4
********

You see when we get too close
the fire is no longer warm
or our field of vision
wide enough to see
that is why most problems
continue until viewed

abstractly from afar
and that is why we restless
turn and fight our dream
of the night so much
but are able to live
the dreams of the day.

Verse 5
********

Many call out to us
to have their problems
solved as if somehow
a magic wand we wave
we make the pain and hurt
just go away.

Verse 6
********

Then entrapped sometimes
we too believe this we can do
but it isn't so without
the prompting of the Spirit
who only whispers
in that still small voice
and we in turn must
listen and obey.

Verse 7
*******

There are times we know
experience is such a teacher
to the soul what action
we need to do
or even what we need to say
for as the surgeon cuts
and operates it is his
practice that makes
the difference between
life and death;
so with us it is the same
the blessing is to know
when it is us
or it is from above
that we truly learn
how to love
and see the field
in the Fall
and not the Spring.
