"Is it Sunday Again?"

C.J. Ingerson
1/6/99

Verse 1
********

"Yes!" came the answer
loud and clear from mom
I'm sure pa heard in the barn
and we all knew it was time
to hitch the team and get in line.

Verse 2
********

I remember those days like today
it didn't matter for sun or rain
we went to church on Sunday
one and all even older brother John
for mother counted every time.

Verse 3
********

It really was fun pa would sing
to the horse as we went
mother would remind him
it wasn't reverent to sing
especially to the horses.

Verse 4
********

But he would sing along anyway
and the horses didn't seem to mind
we enjoyed his rich deep voice
but mother would sit and frown
thinking what would the others say.

Verse 5
********

Once at church we scattered like rats
only to be rounded up by the ear
or lock of hair and led to class
some was fun but when the sermon
came you'd felt we'd all been damned.

Verse 6
********

I never understood why the preacher
yelled at us for we're the ones that come
but anyway he did and mother would
shake her head and solemn agreement
while pa would feign being asleep.

Verse 7
********

The most fun was after the service
when the courting would take place
you'd watch and giggle until they'd stare
but it was when the older folk left us kids
to play and have some fun for a while.

Verse 8
********

Then back we'd go into the wagon
for the long ride home always the same
mother asking pa how he expected
us to learn if all he did was sleep
he would answer, "I was counting sheep."

Verse 9
********

The preacher isn't going to do my chores
so while he is sleeping and I'm working
I think it is only fair while he's working
that I get a chance to also sleep
for when I get home I've still chores to do.

Verse 10
********

Mother would fuss, but had to agree
he made sense and was a good man
and that is how is was like yesterday
when I go back to remember a Sunday
remembering the trip better than the sermon.
