Our team was founded by Rich and DJ Eggert, Joe Dorsey, and Eric Dietz(Weedz). The team then added two new players, Anthony and Jon Insinna. We first started playing against Griffin. We never lost to them, even though they often used a 19 year old goalie. They became afraid to play against us, so we had to look for a new opponent. The next summer was the memorable summer of '01. We started playing against the Ransomville Seagulls a.k.a. "Rec". We played every day in a constant 90+ degree heat wave from 1:00 to around 3:30. Our offense was the Irish Connection. Rich was the center and team leader, Jon was the left-wing and a balanced player, and Joe was the right-wing and playmaker. Our defense was more of a secondary offense. Weedz had the hardest shot on the team and DJ was our mascot, he rode his scooter a lot. Anthony was our goalie. He was an impenatrable force of Sanborn nature. He finished the season with 7 shutouts. Although we barely ever lost, we had an inter-team rivalry. Everyone on the team blamed everything on another player. This caused us not to play at our full potential which was not a problem until the playoffs.
In the first game we shut them out 5-0 with the absence of Jon and Joe. The second game was a tragic loss because it tied the series at 1 game apiece. Joe returned for the third game in a clean victory to take the lead in the series 2 games to 1. The fourth game was another crushing blow to our team's spirit. They tied the series at 2. The fifth game was Weedz' greatest moment. Rec's goalie, Mike(22 years old), threw his stick giving Weedz a penalty shot with the score tied at 4. He used his patented "Weedz Ripper" and blazed a slapshot past the goalie and into the net. Game 6 was our chance to win. But again, we choke with a 1 game advantage and they tie the series at 3. Game 7, do or die, a must-win situation. A hot, sunny, Monday afternoon. A beautiful day for a game of hockey. Our team approaches the basketball court of The Sanborn Park, our home court. Weedz shows up in a car with the big water cooler. The game is going smoothly until Anthony, our goalie, accidently tips over the net and causes Greg to miss the goal resulting in a huge argument. When no one is ready, Greg takes a "penalty shot" and scores. For some reason, the goal is counted. Greg then puts a goal in his own net, which puts us in the lead. Unfortunately, Jon puts one between Anthony's legs in an attempted turn-around. The game goes into sudden-death OT. Weedz got the ball at left wing and wound up to shoot. SWOOOSH!!! He missed the ball completely. Greg took the ball and moved up with Steve. He tossed it to Steve, who ripped a top-shelf, corner shot from an impossible angle. Somehow, the ball got past Anthony and scored. Sadly, we lost the championship.
