Things That Happened Before I Showed Up: Anka the Eshu acquired a bag of magic beans, Nip the Kitten Pooka was found wandering hungry and scared, and a group of intrepid adventurers was told to find Sheeva, a dolphin pooka/court bard.
Tasgall (a sluagh) who goes by Caer Flowing Waters in search of Sheeva gets pulled into the top secret quest to find him. The entire party (eshu, two nockers, satyr, and now a sluagh) head to the Goblin Market to ask questions and look around. The satyr leaves Nip in the care of the court, but she escapes and follows the group to the Goblin Market. The satyr is led astray by will-o-wisps and is shot out of the fountain at Waterfront Park. Gearshift and Turnkey (the nockers) go about trying to gain support for their tortoise submarine project. The group leaves after finding Nip wandering around the market, and they go back to Turnkey’s toy store on King Street to plot and plan some more. It’s decided that the group, at Anka’s suggestion, will break into the Old Exchange Building and interrogate the pirates who dwell in one of the locked rooms. Anka and Tasgall take Nip and head back to Anka’s apartment, where she grabs a ninja suit, and then go out for ice cream. The entire group reconvenes at night and goes to the Exchange Building. The break-in is accomplished. Anka, Nip, Tasgall, and the satyr go to find the pirates while Turnkey and Gearshift run around looking for the surveillance room. The pirates turn out to be incidental chimera and the cameras turn out to be shoeboxes. The group runs into a rather sweet lady ghost, whom Tasgall makes tea for. Then they all head for Turnkey’s toy store before the police show up. Anka goes to explore the tunnels beneath the Dock Street Theatre, where she meets ghosts and corpses and the sluagh baron who runs the joint. Anka gives the Baron a magic bean in exchange for the information that “there are places even the dead will not go.” The eshu-girl returns to the toy shop and heads out with the satyr and Tasgall to talk to a corpse at the Bean Brothers Mortuary, where Tasgall works. The corpse, a dead elderly gentleman, is not particularly helpful and the group moves on to talk to the skeleton of Stede Bonnet hanging from the Battery. Stede promises help in exchange for a nice pirate hat. Tasgall recently embalmed the husband of a milliner, and offers to call the woman up to settle debt in exchange for a hat. Tasgall blackmails Mrs. Mills the Milliner: if Mrs. Mills make the pirate hat, Tasgall won’t tell the police that Mrs. Mills withheld Mr. Mills’ medication. The belligerent Mrs. Mills agrees.
