Pianist Jane Jarvis Visits Jazz Series
Venerable "Statesmen of
Jazz" Player
in Watchung
"What jazz keyboardist," the popular jazz riddle goes, "has played for the largest audience?" The clue is in the term "keyboardist." Jane Jarvis, primarily known as a jazz pianist, did for a time play the organ at Shea Stadium, pleasing the ears of thousands of Mets fans in the park... and millions at home hearing the broadcasts.
Jane Jarvis will perform in a much more intimate room on Friday, April 3 when she visits the Watchung Arts Center to play for their Jazz Series. With no seat more than four rows from the piano, it is the ideal spot to hear the venerable pianist demostrate why she is so highly respected in a musical field dominated by men. The music starts at 8 PM, and the tab is only $10.
She's also among the most prolific of composers, with over 300 pieces credited to her. But she's most appreciated as a performer, having appeared with such good friends as Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, Ed Polcer and Milt Hinton, to name a few.
That short list also hints at the diversity of her repertoire. These days, when many of her peers have retired to Florida she goes there to record. Most recently she's toured Japan with the popular Statesmen of Jazz, returning in triumph to cut still another new CD.
One more riddle: "What living female jazz performer has had a festival named after her?" That's Jane Jarvis too. The Jane Jarvis Jazz Invitational has raised funds for jazz education, and attracted some of the greatest players as participants.
