The Jump!

Arms back....... and GO!

After many tries, I finally managed to photograph a few good jumps!

So streamlined they are, how they leap into the night, with eyes closed, in case they happen to brush by something in mid-flight that would otherwise injure the eyes, and the front legs are neatly held to the side as not to snag anything that would otherwise alter their course, and perhaps spin them around and confusing them, and possibly sending right back toward their enemy on the very next leap!

A pondward pounce!

This Bullfrog makes a lumbering leap into the lake :-)

Up like a rocket!

Their back legs pack incredible power! If we humans had the strength (and legs!) to do so, we could easily jump the length of an entire basketball court...... or even further!

Burning off jet fuel :-)

A cool "shot"! Quite often a leaping frog will spray as part of its getaway tactic, perhaps as some sort of deception, causing the would-be attacker to closely investigate the wet area, even though the frog itself is sitting perfectly-still - and at a safe distance away!

Like a speeding bullet!

Sleek and streamlined, the arms are back, and with eyes closed, off it goes into the night! Every jump is a risk, perhaps landing on a thistle or cactus, or landing in front of a snake!

Another fine leap!

This one darts away into the night! This Leopard frog managed to find itself in the picture during the instant of the flash!

The landing.

Perfect landings - with landing gear down, and the front legs being used as the "breaks", these rare images show the exact moment of touchdown!
