Craters of the Moon National Monument: Part 3

Great Rift Zone Cinder Cone Volcano Pahoehoe lava Aa Lava Lunch on the Lava

Craters of the Moon National Monument, Arco, Idaho
This area shows lots of big craters and spatter cones. The Great Rift contains the underground magma which rose to the surface of the earth. This rift is the youngest and most extensive volcanic rift zone on the Snake River Plain. These include a chain of spatter cones and a few cinder cones in the background.

and/or formed a dam

#13 Lots of Pahoehoe lava
that has broken up, and
possibly in the background
a section of Aa (sharp) lava
#14Sometimes the pahoehoe flows
were gigantic, and formed lava tubes.
#15 In the far left corner of
this image, a visitor gives
us a scale of how massive
this thick lava was.
 #16 More broken-up
lava that once flowed
through this area.

#17 As the thick lava cooled,
it bumped into other cooling
lava and flowed over other lava.
