Arthur Numan probably knows Rangers manager Dick Advocaat better than most, having played for him at three different clubs.
Numan was a young left winger at Haarlem in 1988 when Advocaat persuaded him that he should move to left back, and the switch paid off as Numan became a Dutch international and one of the best players in Europe in that position.
After a spell at FC
Twente, Numan rejoined Advocaat at PSV
Eindhoven, where he played for six years and was part of Advocaat's team that won the Dutch League and Cup double in 1996.
He then moved to Rangers in a £4.5 million deal, just a fortnight after representing Holland in the 1998 World Cup. He made his Rangers debut in the 2-0 UEFA Cup victory over Shelbourne and rounded off a fine performance by winning the sponsor's man of the match award.
Throughout the first half of the 1998-99 season, Numan proved himself to be an influential player until he was forced out of action after suffering a chipped ankle. The injury did not respond to treatment and Numan was disappointingly ruled out for the rest of the season.
Numan was fit to start the 1999-2000 season, and after a brief spell on the sidelines early on, he established himself as a fixture on the Rangers left. He made one appearance in the Euro 2000 finals, in Holland’s 6-1 thrashing of Yugoslavia at the quarter final stage, spending the rest of the tournament understudying his then Rangers teammate Giovanni van
Bronckhorst.
Arthur is now in the final year of his contract and Alex McLeish is urging him to stay at the club but the popular Dutchman says he'll make a decision on his long-term future after the winter break.
