Bert Konterman signed from Feyenoord for £4.3 million to become the fifth Dutch signing of the Advocaat era.

His nickname at his former club is King Kon, because of his size and his fearsome tackling.

A member of the Holland squad at Euro 2000, he was a dependable understudy for Jaap Stam in the group matches against Denmark and the Czech Republic.

As well as the chance to link up with a number of Dutch international colleagues, Konterman has been attracted to Rangers by the prospect of playing against top-class European opposition.

"I'm really looking forward to the Champions League with Gers," he said, "And doing well in that competition is our most important goal, along with the league title. Rangers are building a quality team and I see no reason why we can't reach the last eight. I liked what I saw of Rangers last season in the Champions league - they played good, combination football at a high tempo."

After initially being brought to the club as a defender Konterman showed his versatility in season 01/02 when he played the majority of games in midfield.

His high fitness levels and tough tackling allowed him to slot in perfectly when others were out injured.

After picking up an injury against Feyenoord Konterman played through the pain barrier in the CIS Cup final, but was eventually forced to concede defeat and missed the Scottish Cup final.

With his toe now properly healed Bert is a regular in Alex McLeish's squad but knows his first-team opportunities will be limited this season. He has made a handful of starts so far but more often than not he'll be on the bench.

However Konterman is a spirited and committed character and will do all he can to help the club when called upon by Big Eck.
