CITY OF ASHEVILLE USING FLORIDA PRISON SLAVE LABOR

The city of Asheville, NC, in an effort to cut costs has contracted with P.R.I.D.E. of Florida for the purchase of cabinetry. These cabinets are manufactured for P.R.I.D.E. at Union Correctional Institute in Raiford, Florida. The inmates at Union are the sole manufacturing work force.
Despite the fact that Federal Law (P.L. 96-157 sec. 827 codified as 18 USC, Section 17 & subsections) requires these inmates to be paid "The prevailing wage for a like business in the geographical area", those manufacturing the cabinets for Asheville are being paid between 20 and 55 CENTS per hour. In other words, prison SLAVE LABOR!
This company is using slave labor to undercut the bidding for manufacturing contracts. This is in direct contrast to what is called for under the Federal regulations governing prison labor. How many cabinet makers in Western North Carolina were denied the contract because they cannot produce the merchandise as cheaply as P.R.I.D.E. can using SLAVE LABOR?
Despite the fact that the Federal Government has been contacted, in writing, there have been no inspectors at the Union plant. We shall continue to make the wrong doing inside this system public until such time as it comes to an end.
Those in charge of letting this contract may or may not know that their cabinets are being manufactured by SLAVES. But you know now. So what are you going to do about it?
