Dreams of El Salvador

I long to revel in the propriety
of my mother's cut crystal glasses
the only thing I'd take on
as a heirloom of that life

They criticize our generation, Sue
for not remembering the war
But as for me, claiming kinship,
I did not even feel or witness it

You said all you wanted of life
was a Man, Flowers, and a Baby
... I couldn't wish for more myself, but
Fate, it seems, loves to deny us

Arboles de Fuego, Trees of Fire
Burn with a splendour
of a thousand supernovas
Oh that I could burn there, too

The passion of those flowers for living
Smouldering in extasy at sunset
Writhing like gems of rubies
Wrought from flames undying

My soul craves to be likened
to the dewy morning of a jeweled Summer's day
Just like those that were and continue to be
The life and breath of our country
