Gasoline was fractionally distilled in a test tube. The lightest elements came off first and were collected. Then the mid-range and heavy parts were collected separately as well. The color varied from light to dark, the heaviest being dark, and odor was also strongest in the heavy stuff. All three appeared to burn with the same amount of soot and intensity though. This test was to prove that bubbler and/or boilers for vaporizing fuel are not effective since the heaviest (and least powerful) of the fractions in gasoline will be left in the bottom.
