So far this year, we have read four books together (Read Aloud): The Trolls, Once Upon a Marigold, Star Girl and Pedro's Journal. We have just started reading Touching Spirit Bear. Each book has been picked because it either teaches students about one of the Character Counts pillars or because it has a connection to social studies or science. Touching Spirit Bear is a story of a boy (Cole Matthews) who is banished to an island for beating up another student. While on the island, Cole must confront events in his past that have made him angry at himsself and other people in his life. He must also learn to appreciate the strength and beauty of nature and what other animals can teach us about ourselves.
I encourage you to take time each day to talk to your child about the books we are reading in class. Oral fluency and re-telling are important components to building reading fluency and comprehension.
