Directions: Use a separate sheet of paper to answer the following questions.
1. What is the title of your book?
2. How many pages did you read? How long did it take you to read
it (approximately how many days
and/or hours) ?
3. Describe the setting of the story. Be specific. Tell where and when the story takes place.
Example: The story A Year Down Yonder
takes place in a small, “hick town” south of Chicago in the year
1937. It is a very small town that
has been hit hard by the Great Depression. Most of the story takes place either in Grandma
Dowdel’s house or at one of the homes in the town. One of the stories takes place in Old
Man Nyquist’s front yard when Mary Alice and her grandmother gather all
the pecans that have fall from his tree.
4. Describe what you feel is the most
important event in the book. Make
sure you explain why it is so important.
Example: The most important event in the story What
Hearts is when Asa’s mother accidentally takes too many sleeping
pills and he and Dave have to take her to the hospital. It is important because Asa realizes
that his mother is suffering from depression and that he has to be more
“grown up” in order to help her. He also realizes that Dave really loves his mother but that
she does not love Dave anymore.
5. Describe a “connection” you
made while reading the book. Was
it a text-to-self, text-to-text or text-to-world connection?
Example: While reading “Checkers”, I
made a Text-to-Self connection.
The story reminded of when I was about 10 years old. My brothers and I created a game called
Baseball Monopoly. To play, you
needed a Monopoly board and a bunch of baseball cards. My brother used to set up two teams and
play against himself if there was no one else to play with. Dave created Giovanni in order to have
a partner to play checkers.
