“One, two, three, four, and up,” Brian said, clapping his hands together. I groaned. I hated this move. We had to drop to our knees, turn around in a complete circle, the guys would jump up at the end of the turn and the girls would fall back. The guys had to grab us and slide us over, then help us jump “elegantly” up, then the guys had to lift us behind their heads while we did a split in the air. It was exhausting and my partner couldn’t seem to get the concept, not that it was hard or anything.
“Ok, Ethan, you’re not getting it. Come here, let me show you,” Brian said as he walked in front of me. He stood and looked down into my eyes, “Ok, always look your partner in the eyes... it makes the dance personal and you’ll dance better,” Brian advised.
Ethan nodded and watched intently. The music started and Brian and I both dropped to our knees and did the entire dance with so much energy. Everyone stood back and was watching us. After the last step we stopped and looked at everyone watching us.
“Ok, that’s it, got it?” Brian asked.
“Yeah,” Ethan nodded. After practice, I grabbed my bag and was about to walk out of the studio, when I was stopped by Ethan.
“Hey, did you want to maybe get together and go over the moves together?” he asked.
“Uh, sure, that sounds fine,” I smiled.
“Great, I’ll stop by your room tomorrow,” he told me. I nodded and he walked out.
“Dahlia,” Brian called. I stopped and turned to see him walking towards me.
“Hey,” I smiled.
“You danced really good today,” he told me.
“Thank you,” I blushed.
“Um, what we’re going to do is have celebrities, mostly singers, come in and watch everyone every once in awhile. When they see how hard you work and everything, they can get an idea in to who they want to dance for them. Then on performance night is like the final test. They see how they perform in front of hundreds of people and if they do well, they know exactly who they want. Now, if you didn’t know already, I’m in the Backstreet Boys, heard of them?” he asked.
“Uh, yeah,” I nodded.
“Well, I like how hard you work and I don’t want you to listen to anyone, as far as instructors and anyone else wanting you for them. I want you for us, for the Backstreet Boys. I want you to think about it and everything. I know we aren’t supposed to ask the dancers before performance, but I want to claim you while I can, so don’t say anything to anyone. But, would you think about it?”
I can already tell you right now, of course I will! You’re so hot!
“Uh, I would love that,” I smiled.
“Great, thank you so much. I can see you are such a great dancer, obviously,” he told me.
“Thank you,” I smiled.
“Dahlia, you have a guest,” Cassie said walking into the studio.
“A guest?” I asked confused. Scott walked into the studio, holding a bouquet of white roses.
“Scott!” I exclaimed and rushing to his awaiting arms. I held him tight and smothered his face with kisses.
“So soon?” I asked, smiling up at him.
“Yeah, well, I can’t help myself, I missed you,” he smiled.
“Um, let me go upstairs and change. No boys allowed, sorry. Wait down here,” I told him.
“In here?” he asked, looking around.
“Yeah, why not?” I asked.
“Ok, hurry up though, I want to see you and take you out, ok?” he asked.
“Ok,” I smiled and grabbed my bag and rushed upstairs to get cleaned up.
*Brian’s Point of View*
She has a boyfriend?
“Hi, you must be her instructor,” ‘Scott’ said coming up to me, holding his hand out.
“Uh, yeah,” I nodded and shook his hand.
“So, how is she doing?” Scott asked.
“Good, she’s a great dancer,” I replied.
Scott laughed and nodded.
“Yeah, she loves it so much. We always joke that we’re going to get married and live in this huge house, I’ll be a lawyer and she’ll be a dancer,” Scott said more to himself than to me. I nodded and pretended to be amused.
“So, you think she’s going to get a job?” he asked, looking up at me.
“Yeah,” I nodded, not wanting to talk to him, but I kind of felt obligated to.
“So, do you go to school?” I asked.
“Actually, I start college in a few months,” he told me.
“I see,” I nodded.
“Yeah, I’m going to study law. I’m starting college as a sophomore,” he informed me. I nodded, unimpressed by that.
“That’s good,” I smiled. College, that’s good. I mean, people meet people in college, maybe he’ll meet someone he really loves and realizes he doesn’t love Dahlia. I cursed myself, knowing that wasn’t fair to Scott, and much more, it wasn’t fair to Dahlia. She obviously really liked this guy. After about fifteen minutes, Dahlia burst into the studio, her hair soaking wet, a pair of jean shorts, a white tank top, and a pair of sandals.
“You could’ve blow dried your hair,” Scott laughed.
“I wanted to see you,” she shrugged and smiled up at him.
“Come on, let’s go out somewhere,” Scott said. It made me sick, because he obviously loved her too. He didn’t seem like he was going to find someone new or anything. The way he looked at her, I wanted to look at her. I shook the last thought out of my head. I have only known her three days!
“I’ll see you later Brian,” she smiled and took Scott’s hand.
“See you later man,” Scott smiled.
“Bye.”
*Dahlia’s Point of View*
I was so happy Scott was here, I mean, although its only been a few days, I feel like I havent seen him in forever. The flowers he got me were beautiful!
“So, baby, where do you want to go?” he asked.
“I don’t know. Let’s just walk and see where it takes us,” I told him.
“Ok,” he nodded.
“So, where did you get the money to come see me?” I asked, curious.
“Don’t worry about it. The only thing that is important is that I am right here with you,” he said looking down at me. He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and mine went right around his waist.
“I love you,” he said, kissing the top of my head.
“I love you too,” I smiled.
“So, how’s my mom?” I asked.
“You haven’t talked to her?” he asked.
“Like, once or twice,” I told him.
“Oh, well, she’s doing ok, she’s missing you like crazy though,” he told me. I nodded. I could tell he was lying, or at least keeping something from me.
“Scott, what are you keeping from me?” I asked.
“How long do you think your mom and Rick have been together?” he asked.
“I don’t know, she introduced him as her new boyfriend, so not that long, Im figuring, why?” I asked.
“Oh man,” he sighed.
“Scott, what?” I asked, irritated.
“I don’t know if I should be the one to tell you,” he said.
“Tell me what?” I asked, angry. I stopped walking and looked up at him.
“Well, the three of us went out to dinner last night, before I left and um, your mom said something about marriage,” he said.
“WHAT?!” I shrieked.
“Shh, baby,” he said, pulling me to him.
“Oh no!” I said, pushing him away from me. It wasn’t that I was mad at him, I just didn’t want any comfort. I was pissed.
“Baby,” he said, looking a little hurt.
“I have to go call my mother,” I spat and walked the opposite way down the sidewalk.
“Baby, wait,” Scott said, rushing to catch up with me.
He put his arm around me and we walked to the dance school. As soon as I walked into the lobby, I went straight for the phone and called my mother.
“Hello?” my ‘giddy’ mother answered the phone.
“What the hell is going on?!” I shouted.
“Dahlia, is that you?” she asked.
“Yes, it’s me. Now tell me what the hell is going on,” I shouted.
“Dahlia, honey, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Calm down,” she instructed me.
I got angry and hung up. I didn’t want to talk to her now. I didn’t have any energy or desire to. I burst into tears and felt Scott turn me around and hold me.
“Baby, don’t let it upset you. I’m sorry,” he told me.
“Don’t let it upset me? Scott, it feels like my dad just died and my mom is moving way too fast for me,” I said, pulling away from him.
Scott sighed and sat down on the bench and pulled me down into his lap. I curled up in a ball and cried. It wasn’t long before I was sound asleep.
