At This Moment

Alex drove around for a few minutes, regretting the argument he had with me. As he got his cellphone out of his pocket, he turned it on and began dialing the number at his house.

"Hello?" I answered, frantically.

"Baby, I'm sorry," he began but was cut off.

"Not now, Alex."

"Dawn? I am apologizing for getting you upset."

"Not now, Alex!!!" I snapped, as I dropped the phone.

Soon he heard his mom's voice on the other end. "Alex? Get here right now!"

"Mom, what's wrong?" He got a sick feeling in his stomach. "Is she all right?"

"She's in labor. The ambulance is on their way. If you want, come on back here and ride with her, she needs you, or meet us at the hospital." She said, excitedly.

"I'm on my way. Don't let them move her until I get there. I am just around the block!" He yelled, hanging up his cellphone and making a u-turn.

When he arrived home, they were putting her in the ambulance. As he sat down beside her, he saw the tears in my eyes, as he grabbed my hand, squeezing it. "I'm here baby," he spoke quietly.

"Alex! I'm sorry!" I said, between grunts. "I'm so sorry."

"Don't worry about it. Let's just get you taken care of." He said, as the reality of what was happening finally caught up with him. "I'm gonna be a daddy, right now!" He smiled at me, leaning down to kiss me. "I love you."

"I love..." I screamed in pain. "Oh God! I am so scared."

"Me too," he simply said.

Upon arriving at the hospital, they took me back to delivery, and paged my doctor as he stayed outside and called the rest of the guys to inform them of what was happening.

"I can't believe she is having the baby today!" Anna said, looking at Brian.

"I know, she's early, isn't she?" He said, as he maneuvered through traffic. "Hurry up! We have an emergency here!" He yelled.

"I hope everything is all right. Wonder how AJ is handling it right now?" She grinned.

"He'll be all right," he said, "Bone has always been the strongest of us all. He knows how to handle himself in a crisis." He laughed under his breath.

As they sat in the waiting room awaiting word on their friend and sister, we were trying to bring a healthy life into this world. "Push!" The doctor yelled, and began counting to ten.

"Come on, baby, you can do this," he whispered with his head against mine.

"Honey, sing to me. It always helps with the pain."

"What do you want me to sing?" He got brain-freeze for a moment, then remembered her favorite song, as he began to sing, at a low whisper in her ear. "It's undeniable that we should be together, it's unbelievable how I used to say that I'd fall never...."

The rhythm of his voice helped her calm down, as the delivery dragged on. The doctor told him to go get something to drink, then come back, so he made his way to the waiting area.

As he entered the waiting area, the first person he saw was Howie. Walking straight to him, he just grabbed him, hugging him tightly.

"Hey?" He wondered, "Are you all right? Is Dawn okay?" He pulled away from him.

"She's fine. She's doing a great job, but something must be wrong because the doctor asked me to leave. Have you seen mom?" He looked around the room, as he saw his mother sitting in a chair in the corner.

"Mom?" He sat down beside her, "Something's wrong, mom," he said, as tears filled his eyes and his voice began to tremble.

"Oh, baby, everything's fine." she tried to comfort him. "Why do you think something is wrong?"

"The doctor asked me to leave. I can feel it, something's wrong with the baby," he looked at her, as she hugged him tightly.

"Just give it time, she and the baby will be just fine." She rubbed his back.

"I shouldn't have yelled at her today. Why did I yell at her?" He got angry with himself.

"Because you are both nervous at becoming parents for the first time," she said, "Honey, I was the same way. Always arguing and stressed out. I know how she feels. But, baby," she pulled him to face her, "God will make sure that baby has a mother and father, and that you two have a baby."

They all just sat watching the doors to the delivery room for the next forty-five minutes. Then finally, the doctor came out, and approached Alex.

"Mr. McLean? You have a beautiful baby girl. She is with her mother, and you can see them now."

"Doctor Briggs? Why did you ask me to leave? What was wrong?" he asked.

"There was a complication with the baby. The umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck and she was breech, so we had to go in and do a caesarean. But, everything is fine now. Go see your wife and new baby daughter." He patted him on the back as congratulations.

He turned and hugged Denise, and smiled at the rest of the guys in the waiting room.
