"Hi Sinbad," she greeted. She noticed a sly sort of smile on his face and commented, "Well don't you look like the cat that swallowed the canary? What have you gone and done Sinbad?"
"Nothing," he said innocently. "Why would I go and do anything?"
"I don't know, but by the look on your face it was something big."
"I'm telling you, Maeve, it's nothing to be worried about. Trust me."
*He's hiding something.....* Maeve thought. Then, trying to seem as if she didn't care, she said. "Whatever. Oh, have you finished your Christmas shopping?"
"Aye. I just picked up the last two things only a moment before you walked up."
"Well, I still have a few things to get. Do you know how hard it is to shop for your brother?"
"Aye, Maeve, I do."
"Anyway, I'll see you back on the Nomad when I've finished my shopping."
"All right. Bye, Maeve."
The two walked off in their different directions, Sinbad smiling as he patted the place in his shirt where two small boxes were hidden and Maeve wondering what in the world he could be up to.
Sinbad stood on the dock looking out into the crowd of people who were passing by. He was waiting for her to return to the Nomad so that he could give her an early Christmas present. As he spotted her heading toward him, his face lighted up in a smile.
"Hello there, Maeve," Sinbad greeted as he made his way toward her. He noticed that she wasn't carrying any packages. "Did you do your shopping?"
"No, nothing that I found seemed quite right. I just have one gift left to buy, and I can't find anything that's right for that person."
"Maybe you'll find something later."
"Maybe..." she said thoughtfully and then began to move toward the Nomad.
"Maeve, wait," Sinbad said as he stepped in her way. "I want to show you something first. Actually, I want to give you something."
"All right, what is it?"
"It's an early Christmas present. Here, open it," Sinbad handed Maeve the elaborately wrapped box and watched with a smile as she carefully removed the paper and bow. Maeve opened the small box and gasped.
