Although this is only Mr. Averill's second year at DCHS, it is his twenty-first year teaching high school band. Mr. Averill graduated from The University of Florida in 1976 and has done advanced studies at The University of Georgia, Georgia Southern University, University of North Florida, and Florida State University. His Concert Bands, Marching Bands, and Jazz Bands in Florida and Georgia have earned many Superior ratings. Two accomplishments by his bands that he is particularly proud of are his Symphonic Band from St. Cloud High School which was selected "Grand Champion" at the 1993 "Riverfest" International music festival in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the 1999 DCHS Concert Band who made the school's first Superior rating in 58 years at the FBA District IV Concert Band Festival in Gainesville, Florida. In addition to musical activities, Mr. Averill is also a pilot and lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol: The Official Auxillary of the United States Air Force. He has two children; Tina, who is starting high school this year and plays the french horn and bass, and Ryan who is entering the fifth grade and plays hockey.
