THE DOUBLE-HEADED AXE
One of the symbols of Chango is the double-headed axe. This is a tool of Chango, used to destroy his enemies and likewise yours, if you have his protection. the above picture is a ceremonial staff, depicting the two-headed axe. If you remember, this symbol was also used in the Roman empire to represent the authority of the Emperor and the power behind him. Chango works to enforce the universal laws laid down by the Creator, Olofi. His wrath is not indescrimminately directed to anyone, but rather toward those that are unjust and have committed infractions of the moral creed. Chango not only protects his own children, but also the children of other Orishas. He is especially known to protect the children of Obatala and Yemaya. However, anyone that is being wronged can have recourse to Chango's assistance, if they have not themselves transgressed against the moral code and are truly victims of injustice.
THE ELEMENT OF FIRE
As we have said, the Orishas are elevated spirits that are associated with the powers of Nature. Naturally, Chango is associated with the element of fire. How does fire manifest in nature? It manifests through the natural phenomenon of lightening. It is said that man first learned about fire and how to use it when lightening struck trees and caused fires. To the ancients, not only just in Africa, lightening represented the wrath of the Gods. We have seen Chango punish his enemies and the enemies of the Orishas by striking the homes of the evil-doers or by causing the home to catch fire in other ways. Walk the good path. If you are just and do no evil, you never have to fear the wrath of God or of Chango.
