Get Seventeen to vote! -CarrieMB20@aol.com There's an article in the May 1999 Request Magazine called "Give the Drummer Some." It compares the web site activity devoted to drummers (the "traditionally... underappreciated... member of a band") Paul Doucette, Brad Hargreaves and Tony Fagenson. According to the article, there's "less than 1" site dedicated solely to Paul. Can't be so! I'll leave that up to any of you to hash out w/ the mag! Enjoy -Karen (email withheld) SPIN magazine recently ran an article titled "Viva Rock Stars" that mentioned Rob. A magazine called LINK reprinted the article with pics of Rob, Courtney Love, and others. They didn't have much to say but what they did say is below: "Rob Thomas will never be a Rock Star because deep down he's terrified ten million in sales makes him fake -- and that fake is bad. So he goes out of his way to be smaller than life, and wonders what it's like to be a superhero." Here is the link if you want to read the SPIN article in its entirety: http://www.spin.com/magazine/features/mag-19990401-fea2/index.html -Deanne deanne70@hotmail.com Here's an unlikely combination: Rhett Miller of the acclaimed up- and- coming alternative country band the Old 97's has become pals with Matchbox 20 singer Rob Thomas -- and he's not ashamed to admit it. "You could make fun of me with this piece of information, but I hope you don't," Miller tells allstar, rather bashfully. "At a recent show of ours at the Mercury Lounge in New York, Rob was there, and he's kind of been a fan of ours in the press for a while -- in Spin, he cited our last record as his favorite album of that year. He and his fiancee were at the show, and he turned out to be so nice, and just regular. Here's this guy whose album has been in the top 20 for a year, and has sold seven million copies, but he doesn't have any peers who will be nice to him. He doesn't have anybody that he respects -- maybe that's not true, but not many -- but everybody is either antagonistic to him because of their success, or they're a sycophant. And he's nice, he's just a regular guy. So anyway, he and his fiancee came out to L.A. and we went on a double date, and it's been nice. He's a new friend. I don't know if we'll end up writing together or anything, but... He's not evil, they're not evil, and his songs are better than a lot of songs you're gonna hear on the radio... -CDNOW's AllStar Daily News http://p0.com/r.d?5B08Sy6yk=/cdnow.com/allstar/ Rob lent his talents to help out his friends the Gufs on their newest album "Holiday From You". Rob performs back ground vocals on the song "Give Yourself Back". This song is awesome folk!! (I will be uploading it to Deb & Beth's matchbox 20 Page in the next week.) Also, Rob will be collaborating on the new Santana album which is due out this summer. Next week we will be posting a new single from one of your favorite singers. ::scratching head:: I think you know him from his work on MTV, VH1 and Circus of the Stars!!! Got it yet? No...he didn't REALLY do the Circus thing.... It's our own Rob Thomas!! Performing on a single from Carlos Santana's new album. The song is called SMOOTH and it's on Arista Records. Rob wrote the words and co-wrote the music with Itaal Shur And it was produced by Matchbox's own favorite producer...Mr. Matt Serletic. The single should be out sometime mid-June 99'. Stay Tuned for the broadcast! We'll let you know in a few days. Peace, Matchbox20HeadQuarters. From billboard.com- Not surprisingly, artists were lining up to work with Santana..Guests on the album include matchbox 20's Rob Thomas, Dave Matthews,Everlast, Lauryn Hill, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Eric Clapton, Goodie Mob's Cee-Lo, Maná, and Wyclef Jean, who co-wrote and co-produced a track. The salsa-tinged "Smooth," co-written by Thomas and Itaal Shur, is the first single. The tune, which features Thomas singing lead and doesn't officially ship to Top 40, modern rock, and Hot AC stations until June 1, has already been leaked and added to a number of stations. For Thomas, writing a song for Santana and then recording it with him was a dream come true. "The original word was that I wasn't going to sing the song," says Thomas. "When we wrote it, I thought George Michael should do it. But then someone told me that when Carlos heard my voice on the demo, he believed it and wanted me to be on the record." Santana says he loved working with much of the young talent on the album but denies he can serve as a mentor. "I'm too hung up on being a student,"he says. "I'm too in awe of Jeff Beck, Otis Rush, B.B., Guy." -Sent in by Sara, sara.doljak@kiss.uni-lj.si Matchbox 20: Down Under Matchbox 20 Live from Australia, the Orlando, Florida based mega-platinum rockers' first home video is being prepped for a June 22 release. As many of you know, Rob heavily represents anti-gunviolence organizations. But more of us should consider just how important it really is to stop the shootings. I overheard someone just the other day, saying that the number of shootings in or around schools within the past few years outnumber the Columbine High School massacre by far. The problem is that shootings shouldn't be happening at all. The recent news reports have been discussing where the firearms used in the crime were purchased. I was outraged to hear that some were bought at a gun show, where no identification were necessary in the purchasing of rifles or any othe semi-automatic weapons. And yet, although we are all mourning for the incredible loss, there are still some who want to keep things like gun shows. At this , I ask them all just one thing: why? Gun violence may not be the #1 cause of death in the world today, but it's danger is still very clear. To find out more about how to support anti-gun violence organizations, log onto Yahoo! and type in "anti-gun_violence" to search. You will find a number of groups based on-line or elsewhere that can both help you and use your help. Please help abolish gun violence in the United States of America for good, and make sure that another Littleton tragedy never exists! -Calli Wright SailorBug6@aol.com ----------------- [Heaven Sweep Me Away] =============================== F e a t u r e ----------------- -Sent in by Dawn, dawns@sisna.com and CourtXX007@aol.com Transcript of Yahoo! You can blame Adam. matchbox20_live: Adams: Kids - stay in school! mike_0212 asks: Rob, what's your reaction to Stephen Jenkins (3rd eye) going off on your band in RS magazine? matchbox20_live: Rob: You know, nothing. They offered me the article and I turned it down. matchbox20_live: Adam: You know Rob, he's a glue sniffer. Ariana98_98 asks: What is your favorite food? matchbox20_live: Rob: Ooh, hmm. Guppy_da_fish asks: Who are your biggest influences, and how did you start out?? matchbox20_live: Adam: You go, man. matchbox20_live: Rob: My biggest number one influences are Willie Nelson, any songwriters, Van Morrisson, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, when I was growing up I just wanted to be a songwriter. matchbox20_live: Adam: I liked Radio Raheem, and Meltrick Taylor the great welterweight boxing champion, a great influence in my life. Back2Blah asks: Adam do you have any embarassing moments on stage? matchbox20_live: Adam: I liked the one when Kyle pushed me into a guy in a wheelchair. It was tough, I landed on this guy while still holding my guitar, he was still smiling getting into the show. matchbox20_live: Rob: It was in Houston at the Hardrock, it was a small room with a shitload of people. And at the end of the show, Kyle actually picks up Adam and thru him into the crowd and walked off the stage! matchbox20_live: Adam: It was great! Sophomore album to hit stores some time next year.Right now, yourself or someone like you is getting ready to purchase Matchbox 20's Yourself or Someone Like You. Two and a half years after its release, the damn album is still selling more than 20,000 copies a week, and it has already eclipsed platinum status six times, on the strength of singles like "Push" and "Real World." "When you put out a record and it does whatever it does, you can't stop the momentum of [it]," says M20 frontman Rob Thomas. "But you can stop what you do to pile on top of that. It sounds kind of hokey, but it's up to you to give people a break." Nell Carter couldn't have said it better. M20 will not make the same mistake label mates Hootie & the Blowfish did, when that troupe released Fairweather Johnson while their debut Cracked Rear View was still selling in droves. That business decision arguably has stunted Hootie's career. Thomas says M20 won't release their sophomore effort until early next year, even though the group's compiled a career's worth of material within the last few years. "We're gonna do the eight-CD release," jokes Thomas. In June, members of M20 will climb aboard a houseboat near Atlanta and begin fleshing out material that will eventually become their next album. Thomas alone has a "sheet-long list" of new songs for consideration among other band members' songs. "A lot of the writing process is kind of an independent thing for a lot of people, just 'cause we have huge egos," he remarks. The band will begin recording the next record in July up until October, when Thomas will be getting married. Recently, Thomas collaborated with Carlos Santana on a new song called "Smooth," which will appear on Santana's forthcoming album, due in May. Other artists who guest on the album include Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Dave Matthews, Everlast and Eric Clapton. "On the first few takes [of 'Smooth'] there are these twenty-minute versions with just screaming back and forth between Santana and the vocal," Thomas says. "It was mad fun." On May 1, what Thomas considers the final chapter on Yourself or Someone Like You will unfold when a pre-recorded M20 live show from Australia airs on pay-per-view. The set includes covers of the Rolling Stones' "Don't Let Me Down," Prince's "Nothing Compares to U" and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," along with a never-recorded acoustic original "Rest Stop." "By early admission, it's not anything like Peter Gabriel's Secret World Live," Thomas says, "but I think it is, for anyone that was a fan of the record, a big period or exclamation point at the end of what we did the last three years." -BLAIR R. FISCHER (April 23, 1999) rs.com - Rolling Stone =Matchbox 20 Fueled By 'Tiny' Hardships For Sophomore LP Highly anticipated follow-up to multimillion-selling debut expected to go into production in mid-summer. Contributing Editor Teri vanHorn reports: LOS ANGELES -- Rootsy pop-rockers Matchbox 20 plan to head into the studio in July to record the follow-up to their multimillion-selling debut, Yourself or Someone Like You, according to frontman Rob Thomas. "The first half of this year's been all about writing," Thomas said at the BMI Pop Music Awards on Tuesday. "Now it's going to be all about recording and getting it down on tape." And to hear Thomas tell it, it's also been about trolling life's little hardships for subject matter. "The first half of this year's been all about writing. Now it's going to be all about recording and getting it down on tape." -- Rob Thomas, Matchbox 20 singer Thomas, whose recent activities have included writing lyrics and music for a song on Latin rock legend Santana's forthcoming album, Supernatural, admits that his most powerful inspiration comes from the unhappiest of moments. So it would seem to be a problem that times, he admitted, haven't been particularly hard since the band released its 1996 smash debut. But Thomas said that for Matchbox 20's new album he managed to find compelling subject matter in life's smaller, day-to-day hardships. "I took the tiny, tiny things that are bad and soaked them for all they're worth," Thomas quipped. "Things are going really good, so it seems like that's the only way to do it. You know, if you spill your water on the floor you're going to get really upset about it." Thomas doesn't expect the new record to hit stores until next year. Dressed in a tuxedo for the BMI awards ceremony, Thomas was accompanied by his fiancée as he stood in the lobby of the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills and discussed his band's new project. BMI -- one of the two largest performing rights organizations in the U.S. (the other is ASCAP) -- later presented him with the Songwriter of the Year Award, an honor he shared with Shania Twain, Mariah Carey and Sarah McLachlan -- as well as three BMI Pop Awards for the hits "Push," "Long Day," "3 AM" and "Real World". Matchbox 20 first gained momentum with the singles "Long Day" and "Push" after they released Yourself or Someone Like You in October 1996. The latter number, which was often misinterpreted as condoning physical abuse in a romantic relationship, became their breakthrough hit in summer 1997. Thomas said the success of his band's first album hasn't put pressure on the quintet's approach to its follow-up. "I've been writing throughout, so it's kind of like the first record was that piece of my life and this record's this piece," he said. Chris Tanner, who from 1994 to 1995 booked an embryonic version of Matchbox 20 called Tabitha's Secret, believes they will defy the "sophomore slump" theory. "Some people have this opinion that bands [with initial success similar to that of] Matchbox may just go into the tank on the next record," Tanner said. "I absolutely do not believe that about Matchbox 20. What this business has lacked for a long time is rock stars. Why some of these bands come and go is because they're faceless. Rob is one of the few rock stars out there now, along with people like Lenny Kravitz and [Wallflowers frontman] Jakob Dylan, and I think Matchbox absolutely has the potential to stay at a top level." Tabitha's Secret featured Matchbox members Thomas, bassist Brian Yale and drummer Paul Doucette. After re-forming as Matchbox 20 in 1996, the three recruited guitarists Adam Gaynor and Kyle Cook. Fans expressed faith that the band won't disappoint on its next LP. "I think Matchbox 20 is a band with total longevity," wrote Brianna Douglas, 19, of Colorado Springs, Colo., in an e-mail. "The last time I saw them live, I could feel how much they'd developed since the album. It's cliché, but you know the saying, 'They're like fine wine.' " On June 22 Matchbox 20 will release a live concert video taped during their Australian tour; a live DVD will follow Aug. 31. Part 2 ~ Issue 14
