Well, things are extremely dry in the news area, obviously. They're recording now. I guess that's news, not new news though. The biggest thing is probably the 'Smooth' single, Rob contributed lyrics and vocals to the Santana cd 'Supernatural'. You can find some info, a review, and lyrics further in the issue.

The single "Smooth" video is now being shown on VH1 and MTV. Of course you can request it for Total Request Live on MTV, and probably MuchMusic's On Demand. There's a much better chance of seeing it on there if you request. On Canada's Much you just need one creative looking letter to get your video played but on MTV you have to be in an army of thousands. Love the U.S. of A. :P

In case you didn't know, Marisol, Rob's Fiancee, is in the new video "Smooth" she is holding a fan in the window.

Don't forget the songs
That made you cry
And the songs that saved your life
Yes you're older now
And you're a clever swine
But they were the only ones who ever stood beside you

For a taste of something different this issue we're serving up influences. The bands that have helped shape matchbox 20's sound and just have given them something to groove to. The songs we listen to, the great songs, stand with us and perhaps shape who we are. It's just so cool to delve into something totally different. Old blues, classic rock, the stuff that's shaped rock 'n roll today. Amazing bands are in the past. We are covering a few major influences in detail then at the end of the feature there's a general list. And hell, at least if you're ever face to face with a band member you have a guaranteed conversation starter.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[[[[[[===------R. E. M.
[influence of] Entire band. Paul was particulary influnced by Bill Berry (drummer)

[songs you'll know]
The One I Love, Losing My Religion, Man On the Moon, Everybody Hurts

=This is R.E.M., baby. One of the only true alternative bands still breathing. Born 01/01/1980 in Athens, Georgia they brought guitar-pop back to the underground and haunting melodies paired with garage rock to the mainstream. Berry left the group in 1997 but they've continued on and are still influencing generations of rock bands.

[influence of] Rob, but perhaps more

[songs you'll know]
Please Please Please {covered by mb20}, I Got You (I Feel Good), Make it Funky, Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, Night Train

=The Godfather of Soul, the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, Mr. Dynamite. James Brown has influenced the course of popular music since the 50s and his perfomancing took your breath away. He IS the rock star. He turned R&B into soul and soul into funk. Now well into his 60s, he opens Woodstock '99. Keep on, keepin' on brother.

[songs you'll know]
Satisfaction, Wild Horses, Ruby Tuesday, Time is On My Side, As Tears Go By, It's All Over Now, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Women, You Can't Always Get What You Want (covered by mb20)

=Born in 1963 London they still call themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band. They were the alternative to the Beatles in the British Invasion, fronted by Mick Jagger with Keith Richards (guitar/vocals), Brian Jones(guitar), Bill Wyman (bass), and Charlie Watts (drummer). Their popularity has no bounds and it's impossible to not hear thier influence everywhere.

[[[[[[===------Neil Diamond
[influence of] Adam

[songs you'll know]
I Am I Said, Sweet Caroline, Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon

=His career began in 1966 carried by his pop/rock style laced with gospel and
country influences. His albums also began to go gold consistently beginning. Neil Diamond is still going strong while touring and singing his incredibly sensitive yet popular songs that have been around for a very long time!

=Elton John may be the biggest pop superstar of all time. His songs are deeply engraved in pop culture. He's had to battle his own demons and afterward established an AIDS Foundation. His sense of style is ever cool and song-writing ever superb.

[[[[[[===------Ani DiFranco
[influence of] Paul, Adam and Rob (maybe Kyle and Brian too)

[songs you'll know]
Little Plastic Castle, Dilate, 32 Flavors and Then Some, Untouchable Face

=Ani is the face and name of modern indie women and perhaps the entire movement. She writes about the world around her, using her own experience as a starting (never an ending) point. There is no single sound or song which encapsulates the range of Ani's
craft. So far she has released spoken word tracks, dance remixes, and a double live album.

[Rob] Steve Burry, Jim Croce, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, Duke Ellington, Al Green, Elvis Costello, Del Amitri

[Adam] Michael Jackson, Al Green, Stevie Wonder

[Brian] Geddy Lee

[Kyle] Couldn't find any

-This is in no way a complete list and we apologize for the lack of Kyle and Brian influences (besides the entire band references in R.E.M., Rolling Stones, etc).

CD Review:
Santana and Rob Thomas

Wow! 6 months ago who woulda thought? If someone had suggested the idea that Rob could write and sing a Spanish flavored song-I would have said "No way in hell-it wouldn't sound right!" I have been proven wrong. I bought the CD the first week it came out already knowing the song was good. I listened to the other artists who collaborated with Carlos Santana and in my honest opinion-none of them fit like Rob. They have good lyrics, but do not go well with that type of music. Smooth changes all that. It's a great mix and some awesome guitar playing by Carlos Santana. rob has shown as usual that he can adapt to any situation. Not only that, but he comes out on top!!

Review of matchbox20.com
Hello out there. I was bored so I thought I'd complain about the matchbox20 official website. I'm sorry, but there's only one word to describe it: BORING! I know there isn't much to update and all until the guys start touring again, but there could be a different layout that would be better. I mean, I've seen some better official webpages in my days, like NoDoubt.com and KoRn.com. I've seen some unofficial sites out there like AGFC, Just Hang, ISbtO, etc. that have great layouts. I bet if they joined forces to make matchbox20.com it would be a great website. We need a change in atmosphere, and why not let it first start with matchbox20.com?
- Alix "the Great"
AlixDGreat@aol.com

Kyle. Kyle does not get enough attention. What's up with that?
-MB20NSyncN@aol.com

Call me crazy, but is matchbox20.com BoringAsShit.com? I think that Eric(the web-e) could do SO much more with it. The pictures are boring and we've seen them enough already...i mean...pictures of the 'stix don't get boring but when interesting, new, things could be added...why not add them?! The guys have grown since Long Day and Push, the video stills have got to go. I could give Eric some pictures if he'd actually take time to WRITE BACK to people's e-mails!!Alright so the postcards from the road isn't ANCIENT, but for a while I was wondering if Adam was still alive. I know the boys have a lot on their minds, don't get me wrong...but just a LITTLE more interaction. I think that one of the sites out there now like Just Hang(http://come.to/justhang) or the Long Day 'zine would be a much better "official site", but it's not up to me. Oh well. I'm not like a mean person but I had to vent.

-Matchbox 20's Thomas Flawless Behind the Mic
by Corey Moss
Daily Staff Writer for the Iowa State Daily
March 9, 1998

A flawless performance by singer Rob Thomas Saturday night at Stephens Auditorium turned the alternative rock cabin that is Matchbox 20 into a mansion of musical emotion.

Thomas's voice, which perfectly blended the comfort and intimacy of a club show with the power and prowess of an arena concert, was undoubtedly the story of the nigh, as it treated fans to such gems as "3 a.m." and "Real World." Matchbox 20 took the stage to the beat of "Busted," one of the darker tracks on the band's debut, "Yourself Or Someone Like You." Thomas proved he came to play from the start as he distorted his voice by singing through a CB handset for most of the song.

The effect was perfect for "Busted" and matched the alterna-atmosphere set by the artsy video played prior to the band's entrance. Matchbox 20 continued into "Girl Like That," which was sparked by a catchy guitar hook and the chorus, "But it's better than nothing. The weather outside is frightful, but inside it's not so bad," Thomas said before breaking into "Real World," the next single from "Yourself Or Someone Like You."

As his Eddie Vedder eyes grazed the auditorium, Thomas entered into the beautiful ballad,"Shame," perhaps the most well-timed song of the night. He managed to ruin any heartwarming moments, however, by announcing that the next song was about "something very special, something very dear to us -- it's about trying to get laid."
Matchbox 20 then entered into "Damn," which featured an amazing guitar solo by Kyle Cook. Thomas followed "Damn" with a short solo that led into "3 a.m." Matchbox 20 easily captured the feel of the song on the record and then some.

Bassist Brian Yale finished the tune on a funky bass line that Thomas used as the backing of a cover of the classic Temptations song "Mercy Mercy Me." The band continued to jam through "Yourself Or Someone Like You" tracks, throwing in a few new tunes, both of which were heavier on the guitars and laced with danceable rhythms.
The summer anthem "Push" ended Matchbox 20's first set in amazing grace and style.

With the crowd on their knees, Thomas returned to the stage with a guitar in hand and played through the first verse of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." He was then joined by Cool For August singer Gordon Vaughn for a dynamic duo of melody and harmony, which made "Time After Time" the most powerful song of the night.

The band returned for another new song and the closing "Long Day," in which Thomas remarkably opened yet another door into his heart. As the song came to an end, Thomas ad libbed the words "It's snowing here in Iowa. I bet it's snowing all over the world." With a singer of Thomas's caliber behind the mic, Matchbox 20 will be standing tall for years to come.

-From The Slant: Orlando's Community Webzine
http://www.theslant.com/music/articles/match.html
February 9, 1998

I have to admit that it had been awhile since I had witnessed a full-on Rock n Roll extravaganza like the one Matchbox 20 put on at the Bob Carr last night. Unfortunately, it had been so long that I had forgotten some of the wonderful nuances of the Rock concert - the rock n' roll theatrics, the screaming fans, the halter top-wearing teen-age girls hanging out by the back door waiting to score with a member of the band
(my personal favorite). I actually considered selling my back stage pass to one of them but decided against it; instead I gave one of the poor girls a coat.

The show began early with Cool For August, who put on a spirited set. Although I can't say I like the band's music, I commend them for really giving it everything they had - "A" for effort guys!

When the audience was sufficiently "warmed," MB20 began the festivities in true Rock n' Roll style. Before the curtain went up, a video screen came down randomly displaying a myriad of pictures; cows, trucks, barns, I think I saw my mom in there somewhere.... Anyway, when MB 20 finally appeared, they stunned the audience with an audio visual assault that was as professional as any I have seen. Even someone who didn't like the
songs could appreciate the musical prowess of the band, especially guitarist Kyle Cook, who proved to be an accomplished singer and soloist. I have always said that the difference between a local and a national band (besides equipment) is lights, and MB20 had 'em. Even a deaf person could enjoy the show by lights alone.

The band of course performed all the singles from the album (accompanied by most of the girls in the audience), as well as some tracks that didn't make the cut. I was thoroughly impressed by their cover of Marvin Gaye's "Mercy, Mercy Me", which initially caught me off guard. It's not exactly the type of tune you would expect a band like MB20 to do, but then again, that's what "covers" are all about. They pulled it off
flawlessly, right down to the guitar sounds.

Although the band as a whole was great, the high point of the night was Rob's solo-acoustic rendition of "Hang" - to me, one of his best. Honestly, I didn't think Tabitha's...I mean MB20 had that kind of show in them, but I was so wrong, the boys were nothing short of awesome. MB20, the band everybody in Orlando seems to know personally, came to silence the nay-sayers and to show what a triple platinum selling band
really sounds like.

For Rob

All I can see
Is the wonder hes under
And I'm feeling quite cold now
I'll go back to the thunder
All I can hear
Are the tears that are falling
From his dark lonely eyes
All the secrets he's stolen
When all I can taste
Is the salt of his skin
And I cant help but touch
The fear in his grin
When all that I know
Is all that is him
From his cowering eyes
To his sensitive skin
All I can do
Is wait for the day
When my dream will come true
And he'll take me away

Smooth {from the new Santana album}
(words by Rob Thomas music by Itaal Shur and Rob Thomas)

Man it's a hot one
Like seven inches from the midday sun
I hear your whisper and the words
Melt every one
But you stay so cool
My Munequita
My Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa
You're my reason for reason
The step in my groove

And if you said this life ain't good enough
I would give my world to lift you up
I could change my life to better suit your mood
Cuz you're so smooth

And It's just like the ocean
Under the moon
Well that's the same as the emotion that I get from you
You got the kinda loving that can be so smooth
Give me your heart
Make it real
Or else forget about it

Well I'll tell you one thing
If you would leave it'd be a crying shame
In every breath and every word
I hear your name calling me out
Out from the barrio
You hear my rhythm on your radio
You feel the turning of the world
So soft and slow turning you round and round

And if you said this life ain't good enough
I would give my world to lift you up
I could change my life to better suit your mood
Cuz you're so smooth

It's just like the ocean
Under the moon
It's the same as the emotion that I get from you
You got the kinda loving that can be so smooth
Give me your heart
Make it real
Or else forget about it

It's just like the ocean
Under the moon
It's the same as the emotion that I get from you
You got the kinda loving that can be so smooth
Give me your heart
Make it real
Or else forget about it

Or let's forget about it....(repeat 7x)

Let's don't forget about it (repeated many times)
