Chapter 14
The memory that comes clearest to me when I think of the trial
is when Brian
and Kevin told all the secrets, and AJ and Howie
tried to cover it up with lies.
"The state calls AJ McLean to the stand!"
AJ stood quickly
and walked to the witness stand and
placed his hand on a bible.
"Do
you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing
but the truth?"
"I do," AJ replied and took a seat as Mr. Green
asked him questions.
"Mr. McLean, where were you on the night of the murder?"
"The
guys and me all went to play basketball… Nick stayed in the
hotel though."
"Why didn't Mr. Carter go with you?"
"He said he was
tired!"
"What was the relationship between Mr. Carter and Mrs.
Robinson?"
"It was good at first until Carla started bringing Nick
down… he
loved her, bought her everything… did everything for her!" AJ answered,
I knew he was lying but I didn't care anymore, I didn't care about anything!
"No more questions your honor!" Mr. Green said and took a seat
at the table across from me.
"Mr. Foster, your witness!"
"Mr.
McLean… you say that their relationship was good until Carla
started bringing
Nick down… what did Carla do?"
"I don't know… she always said the
meanest things and Nick took it, he was always
so nice to her."
"Then
why would Carla kill him?"
"I don't know…that's something you need
to ask her!"
"No more questions your honor..."
"Next
witness!"
"The state calls Brian Littrell to the stand."
Brian
got up slowly and placed his hand on the bible, then took a seat after he
swore
to tell the truth.
"Mr. Littrell, what was the relationship like between
Mr. Carter and
Ms. Robinson."
"It was great at first, like
AJ said and then they began
fighting all the time."
"Was this
Carla's fault?" I saw Brian hesitate then the tears started
falling from
his eyes
"No, at first Nick started it all the time… said really heartless
things to
her, told her she was wasting his time and he didn't know why he was
with her, he was mean! Then Carla started the fights…their relationship turned
into constant fighting!"
"Do you believe Mr. Carter cheated
on Carla?"
"Yes… I do… with Becky, I saw her around, Nick liked
her." Brian replied
truthfully as my heart sank like a treasure to the bottom
of the ocean.
'She was always there and I didn't know it!' I thought to myself.
"No more questions your honor!" Brian stood and walked slowly back
to his chair, sat down and buried his head in his hands.
The last day of
trial was the worst, the day that everyone except for
Brian and Kevin cheered
when the jurors said my sentence was the death penalty.
I watched as Brian
broke down into Kevin's arms.
I could hear him screaming, "I'm loosing
my lil sis… I've already lost
Nick… don't take her please!"
He screamed
through his tears and my eyes welled up.
"Good-bye Brian… I love you
and I'll always be looking over you!"
I whispered as two police officers
carried me out of the brown courtroom.
