Lyrical Musings

Sometimes the lyrics to songs can explain the way that I am feeling far better than I ever could. This page is for those times in my life where the only thing I can do is repeat the song lyrics over and over in my head, and realize how closely they seem to mirror my life at the moment. Ah, the human experience, so different, and yet, so much the same for each and every one of us!

Medical School

open my books, take in silence and wait for the dawn..." ~ billy pilgrim - "Try"

emerging triumphant in time for the season's first snow" ~ Edwin McCain - "Rhythm of Life"

and even if I wanted to, I've got no place good to hide
Concrete is my color and commerce, its my pride...

"Where does the time go? Spinning my wheels, standing still...just like running on ice
I only gain a little distance when I fall." ~ Vertical Horizon - "Falling Down"

Something cute about burning out, it's better than fading away" ~ Edwin McCain - "Darwin's Children"

All my trials, it added up to *her*" ~ Jackopierce - "Trials"

"I'm there by your side, looking in your eyes, seeing you with me, what else could there be?
If I could get away, I would be there today. You'd be wearing that smile I haven't seen for a while." ~ Pat McGee Band - "Haven't Seen in a While"

"So we're ok, we're fine. Baby, I'm here to stop your crying. Chase all the ghosts from your head.
I'm stronger than the monster beneath your bed, smarter than the tricks played on your heart.
We'll look at them together and we'll take them apart. Adding up the total of a love that's true.
Multiply life by the power of two." ~ Indigo Girls - "Power of Two"

Lyric of the Hour

This particular section of the page is for those times that can best be summed up by one particular song...this week it was:

July 1999

Sometimes, you just have to look at your life with a bit of a tongue-in-cheek attitude. It keeps you sane! I love this song off of Edwin McCain's newest release, "Messenger," because he has a great way of looking at the world with a wry twist of humor mixed in with the serious. For me, right now, it truly is a "Beautiful Life!"

Beautiful Life
Edwin McCain - "Messenger"

Another beautiful morning under stars and bars
and F-series pick-ups and rusted out cars,
and they're eating breakfast at the strip bar,
just to have a peek.

And the beer soaked angels spread their wings,
and they dream of twenties and diamonds and things,
and somehow that might ease the sting
of the company they keep....yea...

And the vets still talk about the Tet Offensive,
and the freshman boys all look so pensive,
'cause livin' large is so expensive.
Hope Daddy fueled the jet!

And we'll fly off to the Hard Rock Casino,
and we'll put on our neatly pressed and fine chinos,
and we'll laugh at the guy in the El Camino,
Is that the only car he could get?

It's a beautiful life
It's just as advertised
It's all for one low price
Just read the fine print and you'll be content
With your beautiful life

And the record smoothies say "What a sound."
You're the greatest thing we've found,
But you're gonna have to lose a couple of pounds
We're gonna put you on TV

And don't ya think our place is so swank?
Don't worry about that guy, he's high on crank.
That's exactly why his last record tanked,
and let that be a lesson to me.

It's a beautiful life
It's just as advertised
It's all for one low price
Just read the fine print and you'll be content
With your beautiful life

And all our churches glow.
Communion wafers trash TV shows.
Say, "Hey, at least you don't have this strife,
'cause you'll be warm and safe,
in your beautiful life."

And it's hard to tell what's true compassion,
when it's dressed up in hair and nails and fashion,
and the tabloids all rush to cash in
on what we should believe.

And I hope I never see the day
when there's nothing on the planet left to save,
and oxygen is the designer crusade
as we all fight to breathe.

It's a beautiful life
It's just as advertised
It's all for one low price
Just read the fine print and you'll be content
With your beautiful life

April 1999

Ever had one of those weeks (or months) where you just couldn't seem to get it together? No matter how many times you've told yourself that, "Ok, this is it, get yourself together *for real* this time?" Even when everyone else just seems to assume that you are *so very* together? In a lot of ways, that is what this song signifies to me. It reminds me a lot of myself and my friends who are going through this med school mess with me (Josh and Charlotte, in particular).

This Is Where It Ends
Barenaked Ladies - "Born on a Pirate Ship"

I don't buy everything I read
I haven't even read everything I've bought
I don't cry every time I bleed
My eyes are dry, but they're bloodshot

I have faith in medication
I believe in the Prozac Nation
You play doctor, but I've lost patience
But this is where it ends
This is where it ends
Call the police and call the press, but please, dear God, don't tell my friends
This is where it ends
This is where it ends

Where's my pride?
Where's my self esteem?
Does it show in the drinks I've bought?
I don't hide every time I'm seen, but I try not to get caught

Make excuses for behavior
Can my illness be my savior?
Hid my heart while you still gave yours
But this is where it ends
This is where it ends
Call the police and call the press, but please, dear God, don't tell my friends
This is where it ends
This is where it ends

Bridge:
She says she wants to live in a movie
I say I want someone else to stand behind me and write it all down
'Cause I can't be bothered doing it myself
And I don't want the responsibility of proving its importance

I have loved and I have waited
Been picked up and been sedated
Mental health is overrated

But this is where it ends
This is where it ends
Call the police and call the press, but please, dear God, don't tell my friends
This is where it ends
This is where it ends

I'm planning to add on to this page. I'm certain that as I have more time to think about it, I will be able to come up with a LOT of new additions! Stay tuned!
