San Sabastian de Garabandal is located 15 miles inland from the Cantabrian coast about 35 miles (50 miles by car due to winding roads) W / SW of Santander, the capital of the small Castillian province of the same name. Garabandal lies in the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains (near Cosio) at an elevation of 1,630 feet. The Pena Sagra Ridge, which rises to 6,000 feet behind it, is hidden in fog much of the time.
Sometimes listed in area maps as "San Sabastian", do not confuse it with the resort area by the same name to the east of Bilbao.
Garabandal's weather during the time of the Miracle will be DAMP and COOL. The area gets roughly half it's annual rain-fall during those months. Temperatures can dip into the 50's and winds tend to pick up at night. At these elevations nightfall brings a NOTICEABLE drop in air temperature!
Although roads through the mountains have been "improved", care should be taken as they are narrow and winding. Walking on the road serface itself is NOT reccomended as European drivers tend to hurry along at a good clip. Busses and cabs are available at the ports and larger cities in the area and group rates can be found with some prior planning. If traveling by ferry, money exchange booths are operated onboard, and having a goodly sum of local currency never hurts to "smooth" the way.
If you are planning to travel to Garabandal by way of another stop in Europe... remember that European power outlets are operating on 220 Volts. Bring a transformer or leave the lap-top home!
